Did you know…?
• Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury and death for women worldwide.
• Only 17% of national parliaments are made up of women.
• 70% of the nearly 1 billion illiterate people in the world are female.
• In the U.S., one in five women will be victims of rape in her lifetime.
• One woman dies every minute from preventable, pregnancy-related causes.
• In some countries, the HIV/AIDS infection rates for teenage girls are 3 to 6 times higher than for boys.
• Where women do the same work as men, women are paid 30 to 40 percent less.
• The majority of the world's women cannot own, inherit, or control property, land, and wealth on an equal basis with men.
Women's Learning Partnership for Rights, Development, and Peace (WLP) is dedicated to training and empowering women to take on leadership and decision-making roles so that they may affect positive changes in their families, communities, and societies. A woman who is aware of the skills of a good leader, and recognizes those skills within herself, is more likely to further develop and make use of those skills. A woman who is aware of the legal protections that are afforded to her by the state is more likely to protect herself from abuse. A woman who is aware of the skills of a good leader is less likely to lead in a manner that is oppressive and exclusive of diverse interests. If she knows how to build professional relationships and supportive networks, begin a campaign and communicate the goals of the campaign, and make use of available resources, she is more likely to fight for a cause- and succeed. Maybe she will fight to make domestic abuse a punishable crime. Perhaps she would like to see female genital mutilation outlawed so that it is not among her daughter’s childhood memories.
Things do change. In 2005, Kuwaiti women finally won the right to vote and participate fully in politics, following years of organizing and campaigning. After a 9-year struggle, Malaysian women witnessed the passing of legislation to criminalize domestic violence. In 2007, Moroccan women won the right to pass on their Moroccan nationality to their children.
In cooperation with 18 autonomous organizations across the global south, and particularly in Muslim-majority countries, the Women’s Learning Partnership conducts programs and trainings to prepare women to affect change for a more humane and peaceful world.
