About me
Born in Okposi, Ebonyi State of Nigeria, Dr. Laz Ude Eze - a physician, an alumnus of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and a graduate student of public health in the University of Kentucky, US is one of the most celebrated young Nigerians.
Whilst a student, he made indelible footprints in many campus organizations where he held various leadership positions. He also served in different capacities in the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA) and the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA).
As the FAMSA administrator, Laz promoted the FAMSA Youth Agenda - a project that seeks to get medical students in the continent involved in community development projects that would benefit their host communities; aimed towards the improvement of health in Africa. His achievements in this regard got the attention of the African Union (AU) who invited him twice to the Conference of African Ministers of Health Meeting. This gave him the opportunity to participate in the promulgation of health policies for the continent.
His passion for the reversal of HIV/AIDS infection among young people in Africa drove him to start an anti-HIV club known as HIV/AIDS Prevention Promotion Youth (HAPPY) Club in the University of Ibadan in January 2006. On the platform of HAPPY Club, he partnered with NGOs such as the Society for Family Health (SFH), the Association for Reproductive and family Health (ARFH) and Centre for HIV/AIDS Intervention, Nigeria (CEHAIN) and relevant government agencies to organise public lectures, free HIV counseling and testing and training of peer educators in the university. He was one of the two students’ members of the UI steering Committee on HIV prevention that drafted a campus-based HIV/AIDS policy. HAPPY Club is the officially recognized students HIV/AIDS advocacy group in the university and a new chapter has been established in Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Southeast Nigeria.
Laz was a campus correspondent of a national daily, THE NATION newspaper on which he wrote on youth leadership and reproductive health issues. He was recognized as the most committed campus correspondent from Western Nigeria during the second anniversary of the newspaper.
He has participated in several local and international conferences, some of which he acted as a workshop facilitator and trainer on issues relating to HIV/AIDS advocacy, good leadership, and community development, peace and conflict resolution and youth empowerment . He was one of the fifteen international delegates that participated in 2008 edition of the annual Global Engagement Summit at Northwestern University, Illinois, USA – a capacity building, mentoring and networking programme for students involved in community services and development.
As a medical intern in Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, he served as the Public Relations Officer of the Association of Resident Doctors; thereafter, he joined the services of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Abuja.
He uses social media for advocacy on various health topics. He was the Youth Action Ambassador (2008-2010) of Young People We Care, an international youth-led and youth-focused NGO whose mission is to educate and inform youth on global issues; inspire them to take action; encourage youth participation in global issues; identify and build sustainable partnerships aimed at youth development; and provide young people with the tools and resources required for effective action.
In recognition of his academic excellence, contributions to HIV advocacy and outstanding leadership prowess, he has received over fifteen awards one of which was the most versatile graduating doctor in the University of Ibadan, 2008.
He founded The GUIHDE Initiative (HAPPYNigeria) - a non profit organization on health development.
He was the President of University of Kentucky Students' Public Health Association (UKSPHA) in 2012 and a columnist with The Newsnest.
Laz is passionate about sharing ideas, gaining new skills that will further boost his youth advocacy work and above all a citizen of the world who thinks beyond ethnicity and religion with the aim of building a better world. He likes humble and honest people. He is an athlete, plays badminton and a fan of Manchester United.
