About me
Nelson, 29, is the National Focal Point for Mozambique for the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS. He is a Medical Doctor and an SRHR and HIV activist. He began working on youth issues at the age of 15 as a volunteer with the Youth Association AJUDE. Nelson’s interest in HIV began because he was living in Manica, one of the most highly-affected provinces by HIV in the country. As a medical student in Maputo, Nelson came into daily contact with people living with HIV, and was inspired to work on a UNICEF and Youth Ministry project providing children and adolescents with information and skills to protect themselves from HIV in 5 rural districts in Mozambique.
After graduating from GYCA’s Political Advocacy E-Course, Nelson designed and implemented an advocacy campaign to integrate youth perspectives into Mozambique’s HIV/AIDS National Strategic Plan in 2009/10. He is a member of a multi-sectoral technical group on HIV/AIDS, comprised of the Health Minsitry, National AIDS Council, UNAIDS, WHO, et al., responsible for nationwide HIV surveillance and the yearly AIDS Epidemiologic Surveillance Report. Nelson led the development of GYCA’s Mozambique UNGASS Youth Shadow Report, monitoring the country’s progress in achieving youth targets in the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. As GYCA’s NFP, Nelson organized a five-country project researching and discussing young people’s SRHR in Tanzania, South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and Zambia.
Nelson worked on mobile HIV testing and counseling with the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in Cape Town, South Africa. In 2006 and 2007, he helped reform the National Youth Policy, and in 2005 and 2006, he worked on a joint project to protect young people’s SRHR with UNICEF, the Youth Ministry, and a Youth Association. He also did an internship in Guatemala on youth and globalization. He has participated in several international events such as the 5th World Youth Congress by Peace Child International and the Southern African Medical Students Union conference.
