About me
Hi! My name is Rahel Weldeab and I live in Asmara, Eritrea. I have a bachelor’s degree in public administration and political science; I studied at the University of Asmara.
Being the progressive individual I am, I started working for my organization while studying at university. I studied and worked full time starting my junior year. I continue to work for NUEYS until this day (it’s been more than 5 years now).
Major activities that I’ve conducted through the length of my experience in NUEYS, not only as an international relations officer but also as a member of the Central Council, include creating bi-lateral relations with other youth organizations around the world, developing protocol agreements, receiving delegations and organizing activities/meetings upon their arrival, creating political statements and reports, organized a regional youth peace forum, organized an IT Symposium, conducting a donor’s seminar, developing project and program proposals, working as part of fundraising teams, conducting activities for foreigners and registering participants for our bi-annual national youth festival, giving presentations on youth and MDGs, contributing to public relations tasks (writing articles, editing, etc.) and representing my organization during international and regional meetings.
Joining TakingITGlobal has been a very positive experience. In today’s day and age, information communication technology goes beyond borders. More important, when it comes to the global youth movement and global youth initiatives, working in solidarity and taking advantage of ICTs, especially the internet, is essential to achieve full success in our initiatives. Those of us who do have access to ICTs have the responsibility of sharing our knowledge with those who do not have access to ICTs.
I’m a huge advocate for volunteerism. I’ve always been an advocate for volunteerism because it’s an integral part of not only bringing peace and development to this world but also of being an active citizen of the world. It isn’t a question of money but the positive impact one can make. With a world dominated by poverty, conflict, injustice, inequality and environmental degradation, there is no reason to just sit around and watch. Some of us are victims, some of us have jobs; but if I have the ability and desire AND TIME to contribute to peace and development, I volunteer.
I have quite a lot of experience in program/project management, grant writing and fundraising. However, I’ve had the opportunity to take e-courses on grant writing and fundraising and on project management with the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS. I love GYCA and think it is one of the most effective initiatives out there. I once had the opportunity to meet UNFPA’s program advisor and chief for the Eastern and Central Branch Africa Division during his visit to my country. Besides telling him about how my organization has benefited from cooperating with UNFPA, I also told him about GYCA and how it is probably one of the best youth initiatives UNFPA has sponsored. Whatever I said probably made a good impression; a friend of mine who works for UNFPA later told me that he talked positively about our conversation in his trip report.
Working in foreign relations for 5 years now, I have experience in networking on an international level. I am more than willing and able to work closely together youth from all over the world.
