About me
Hello everyone!
My name is Nikki and I am currently the Ontario Team Facilitator/Ottawa Youth Engagement Coordinator for TakingITGlobal's Creating Local Connections Canada program. This means that if you live in Ottawa and are interested in finding out about the cool Creating Local Connections Canada events like workshops, open forums and film festivals that are going on you should get in touch with me!
Aside from TakingITGlobal I am a student at Carleton University in the Directed Interdisciplinary Studies Program. Because the name of my program isn't exactly descriptive, I am essentially in the make-your-own-degree program. As a result I am studying Audio-Visual Activism, or in other words the use of film to enhance activism and the dynamics of activism in general. The issues I am particularly interested in and have tended to focus on are HIV/AIDS, human rights and arms control - though I certainly care about the environment and genocide as well.
The third side of me is the filmmaker. I am predominantly an editor and a screenwriter, however lately I have been dabbling in direction. I really films that are different visually and tell simple, character based stories. My favourite directors are Neil Biswas and Anton Corbjin. My favourite writer by far is Richard Curtis. I have found that I I have gotten older film has become my definer and I think that this will probably be where I spend a lot of time in the future.
In my spare time I enjoy playing the drums and wheelchair basketball. I also listen to a lot of music, lots of underground acoustic stuff, mainly from Ireland. My favourite musicians are Mic Christopher, Lisa Hannigan, Bell X1, Van Morrisson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Joy Division and The Frames/Swell Season. Music is really really important to me, its the fuel that keeps me going.
That's pretty well the essential me... all the interesting bits anyways!
