About me
"Its not what you're dreaming but what you're gonna do..." When Bono sang this in a recent U2 song it resonated deep within me. I was 14 when I had the honor of working with a man who inspired me to spend my life working with other youth to create change in my community. My first job was teaching drama to low-income kids in the housing projects of north Omaha, Nebraska (USA) when I was 15, and have worked with young people since then. I've worked with small community based organizations and large national foundations, advocated for youth involvement, and preached experiential learning everywhere I've been. I've worked for nature centers and in schools, drug treatment clinics and theaters. I've worked with the low-income and under resourced, college students and federal workers. My jobs have taken me across the US and Canada working with a lot of 'kinds' of people: immigrants, African Americans, urban and rural, people from Asia and the Middle East, Central America and eastern Europe.
Today I run The Freechild Project, a small organization who's work includes educational programs, workshops, action research, resource development, and program consultation for individuals and organizations around the world. Our popular website, Freechild.Org is entirely funded by our training and consultation activities. We work with community-based organizations, foundations, and government agencies to meet our mission: To build active democracy by engaging young people in social change, particularly those who have been historically denied participation.
I love my work with young people, and I am very thankful that they have let me work with them. This is the work of my heart and hands, and I'm happy to share it. These days I live the creedo: "If you must dream of the world you want to live in, dream out loud!" Thank you for letting me dream out loud.
