About me
ABOUT ME
I was born in Rusinga Island Suba District in the Western part of Kenya 25 years a go where by my birth day celebrations always fall on 25th March of every year, I am an African with Kenyan nationality, very capable to speak ENLISH,SWAHILI and my local language (LUO) I am about 5.11 ft not employed.
I began the root to my education profession From Primary level in one of the local school around the area Known as Kakrigu Primary School with the help of both my biological parents whose efforts tried to play a better role in bringing us up to see a better feature and help others life. But it is so unfortunate this has not happen since their existence was not meant to be prolonged to reach the age and time to witness their own grand children, they both died. My father died when I was 11 years of age two years later my Mother followed him when I was a bout 13 to 14 years living us parentless at the time when me and my other siblings really thought we could be in need of them the most.
Life could not bear out any sweetness for us after the demise of these two brave people who did not own an immense degree of education in life, but managed to see off our elder brother through high school from the little money they earned from fishing given that this has been the major economic activity on this Island since the days of our fore fathers to date.
I was later brought out of my school of origin to go and stay with my uncle (brother to my mother) where I could see off the remaining of my primary education which indeed happened where afterward I joined high school with the help of my elder brother who by that time was employed in one of the privet company which collapse just with in two years of his employment.
It was depressing to me as the first thing to hit my mind was that I was going to drop from school the second was, how he was going to bring up his family and how me and my other sibling were going to get by being that he was now the breadwinner in our family.
I was lucky enough; my High school education did not take a break in proceedings. I saw the remaining of it until I graduated from it four years later through the Help of my brother’s friend who honored to take up the payment of my school fee, the purchase of books and the other supplies that school requires.
It is now five years since I completed my high school education, I’m married with one wife who has been and will always be the rock of my family; God has blessed us with two children where my first born will be joining her grade two come the year 2009 and my son is only two months old, I love them both more than they can ever imagine.
My getting married, was not a decision easy to take considering that it was in that period when most of my age group would think that it is the time to have fun and enjoy life to the fullest, more sore, when I was looking back and seeing how my brother being under pressure to bring up his children it was sad to the point of shading tears but, was taken up at large by the one fact that HIV/AIDS kills.
After I met the love of my life we both went straight for one choice which was to go for HIV test before getting into any deep closeness and as both our heads ware gazing, the outcome were (-) negative from this point I, we, could not think of anything other than starting staying together without even knowing how we are going to provide for our basic needs.
Dear friends, I am certain to say that God has performed a huge miracle in between my childhood to my adult hood life, I managed to do basics in computers which I am through with and now only looking forward to get a well wisher to support me with funds to proceed with my education which I’m basically intending to begin with Diploma in Community Development and Diploma in HIV and AIDS management then I may proceed to Degree, Masters and further on Ph D depending on how God will play his role.
WHY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & HIV/AIDS MANAGEMENT:
I intend to do community development/HIV&AIDS management because I consider them key as a matter of concern to the society where I come from and by having this pair that I really consider crucial in my brain, I am certain together with the help of well wishers and others; help my communities eradicate poverty by understanding this…….
• Understand various intervention measures in solving social problems in a society
• Use local resources to empower the societies in order to become self reliance. .
• Appreciate the role of communication in social work
• Understand various methods and approaches used in social development activities
• Appreciate the importance of involving other professionals in the development and solving social problems in a society.
• Promote ethical and legal practices in appraising and solving social development problems
• Appreciate the importance of self-entrepreneurial skills in the national development.
• Understand the role of HIV/AIDS in the development of the organizations goals.
• Understand the legal provisions that govern HIV/AIDS management.
• Demonstrate competencies in prevention, management, care and support of HIV/AIDS patients.
• Appreciate the role of networking and partnership in the prevention, the fight, management, care and support of HIV/AIDS.
• Understand global trends in HIV/AIDS and situations.
• Demonstrate high competence in application of appropriate knowledge and skills in the management and control of HIV/AIDS.
• Demonstrate understanding of innovative ways of being self reliant.
• Apply life skills and behavior change and communication knowledge in enhancing positive attitudes and prevention measures towards HIV/AIDS and other pandemics in the
society.
Since I come from a community where by most of people still believe in witchcrafts and they don’t believe that AIDS/HIV kills, this can be the greater opportunity for me to empower them,
Because I witness (and you can quote me there) HIV/AIDS sweeping a way my only parents who bear me to this world, this can be the greater opportunity for me to make them understand that HIV/AIDS is real and it kills.
For the reasons that poverty has proven to be a hard nut to crush because of laxity in my community, this is the time to make them step from it.
I once a gain plead with anyone out there who is so willing to bring space for change in Africa to please help me accomplish the mission that I am excited to begin and attain my goals, so that I will be happy one day when I realize that I was born in this world with a purpose, the purpose to bring change and help a life of that one woman who might be left widow because of HIV/AIDS has taken her husband away from her, the purpose to bring change and help a life of that one child who might be left parentless because of HIV/AIDS has taken away their parents from them, The purpose to bring change for that one Man who might be left widower because of HIV/AIDS has taken away the love of his life from him, purpose to bring change for that one community that has been defenseless because men and women might be taken away at large by HIV/AIDS.
Thank you.
ON MALARIA TRANSMISSION CONTROL
My current work(volunteered)is basically based on malaria control.
What do we do in controlling malaria?
First and fore most, we have to know the tell between control and eradicate on malaria, these are two deferent things that one may think have got the same meaning, which is not right.
Control from a transparent meaning it implicate being in charge of,
While eradicate is to get rid of.
So control as the secondary topic is where me and some of my community members are getting involved together with the help of research institutes like ICIPE and other visiting top scientists persons around the area.
Malaria transmission is the driving force for the often high incidence of clinical malaria in endemic populations. Reduction of malaria transmission is essential for successful control and even more so for eradication of the disease. Transmission in widespread areas covers a wide range of intensities and is determined by local conditions. Interventions specifically aiming for transmission reduction are complex because they require population wide coverage.
Proposed solutions.
As we are all aware that the best ways to fight your enemy until you win the fight, you must first of all know where the strength of our enemy lies on or else your fight might be of no meaning.
This also applies to the fight against malaria.
Previously the concept of hot spots of transmission has been formulated. Targeting hot spots of transmission will be the most effective approach to reduce or eradicate malaria, an approach with community wide effects without the need for a high overall coverage of interventions. This opens the possibility for targeted interventions that will significantly facilitate transmission control.
The role of our team in the community has been
• To identify the mosquito breeding sites,
• Find out what species are available whether they are malaria vector or not.
• Door to door campaign on teaching the community on how to treat their mosquito nets using insecticide
• Inform the community on the importance of sleeping under the insecticide treated nets(ITN)
• Inform expectant mothers on the risks of malaria parasite during pregnancy and after delivery to the first six years of the child birth.
Still on this subject I am involved in going a round the Island using my bicycle for the sampling of adult mosquito strictly on the selected houses by using insecticide sprays.
Identifying of adult mosquitoes that have been trapped from those houses on microscope and data entry.
About Rusinga Island?
Rusinga Island is an Island, off the western coast of Kenya in Lake Victoria grow naturally and connected to Mbita Division by a simple, made, land bridge and it is an excellent example of an isolated, underdeveloped and highly disadvantaged community in western Kenya where HIV/AIDS poses a major health burden in close association with increasing poverty and environmental degradation. Rusinga is home to a growing population of approximately
20,000 people who faces a multitude of problems with rapidly increasing levels of poverty, urbanization of market areas, modernization in house construction, and poorly planned infrastructure.
Soil erosion and loss of biodiversity have meant there are very little productive land and few opportunities to make money other than through fishing, deforestation has contribute to rising unemployment, deteriorating living condition and an increasing HIV/AIDS infection rate which is now estimated to affect 70-80% of the Island’s population.
Fishing being the major practiced economic activity on this Island, this means nearly everyone living on Rusinga plays a part in the fish supply chain that entails the catching, drying, storing and selling of the fish.
Of the 20,000 population in this Island, almost 60% are not of the community origin but are the migrant from other communities who have come in as fishermen and have settled on with their families at the local beaches around the area where by some of them have even hold the hands of our young girls as young as 14 years of age for marriage
Due to the poverty rate and luck of social knowledge from our community, parents tends to give out our sisters cheaply into the hands of this men surprisingly from as cheap as 2kg of sugar, Daily meal which is comprised of fish, maize flour, bread a few shillings and such like bits and piece.
Well, we really cannot blame our parents for this because when we look at the other side of the coin, it is a fact that not all of them can afford to cater for our sisters list of needs if we just keep education aside, THEY CANNOT EVEN PROVIDE FOR THEIR SENITORY TOWELS and some other essential things.
This brings up a number of poverty rates to grow at a higher percentage and it will multiply if a solution is not found for the coming generation.
Fishing being the wheel that progress almost 80 % of the Islanders, its catch is not always 100% depending with the seasons climate, the rainy seasons are always preferred by the fishermen because during that time the catch is good and life somehow feels easy to them but when its dry, life tends to be very rough to them and majority of them always move out in search of their daily bread leaving their young wives and children behind for seasons.
This kind of living is always worrying because these women are always left behind without money or any stable business that can sustain them with their children in providing for their basic needs and while in this kind of frustrating life, a number of them always entangles in sex affairs in exchange for money to provide their needs and feed their children and I am emphasized to be certain that not many of them will be strict to wear any protective during the sexual act because they do not do it out pleasure, but strained merely for the sake of getting money to sustain their life’s needs as well as their children life’s needs and to be far forthright, not a good number of them will suggest a take of few coin from as less as ten shillings from their pocket to buy any protective because that money is what they at that moment in time.
I think by these, nobody will need any further explanations as to what will happen to this community, but it automatically brings in a disgusting answer to your ear that all these creates a space for further spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic to strike in this hopeless society.
My hobbies
It also of great pleasure for me to tell you my hobbies.
Many have told me that I am an honest guy of which I believe is true but your challenge is welcomed.
I love watching soccer but I can also play it when I got the time, reading novels, quest for fiends, going for social drinks, watching movies (based on true stories, drama, and comedy), I enjoy traveling and taking photos as well.
My favorite quote
“You are an immortal soul. Through lies, treachery, deceit and pretense you can destroy yourself. By seeking truth and living a life of helping others, by being honest and decent you will be strong and achieve your power and immortality.”-L. Ron Hubbard
