About me
Eric Agyei Twum is a youth activist who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Sciences & Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. He undertook a one-month internship at the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) MZ Office in July-August 2003 where he served as a Project Assistant on the program, “YOUTH FOR LIFE”. While working there, he discovered certain truths about young people in Ghana which had him asking a lot of questions, many of whom were left unanswered. In October 2004-April 2005, he undertook his final year research project on “Malaria Prevalence & Prevention Methods in the Adansi West District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana” during which he had close interactions with people living in the gold mining township of Obuasi and the surrounding villages. And whilst undertaking the research enabled him to contribute his quota towards alleviating disease in the area, he was also appalled by the general apathy of the young people to communal development and their apparent lack of community spirit. Getting exposed to these truths again had him asking a myriad of questions which his final year thesis could not provide answers to. One of the most compelling questions he had asked himself at that time was “What if, one day, I could engage the youth of these and many other communities in Ghana in a profound dialogue that will cause them to ask the relevant questions which will inspire them take action in their respective communities?”
Four years on, Eric was still asking these and many other questions. And four years on, he founded Visionary Youth Ghana (VYG) which more or less represented the fruits of the impetus he gained from the above experiences. Through VYG, Eric is creating lasting change in Ghanaian society through a host of community projects that aim primarily on the youth. Through VYG, he is causing young people in Ghana to question themselves and their relevance to the status quo on issues pertaining to the dignity of the human person, social & economic justice, sexual & reproductive health and sustainable development through seminars and a host of interactive presentations using the Earth Charter as a guiding document. He believes that it is only by asking questions that young people in Africa can be informed and inspired to become future leaders who truly care and care about Africa and its people. Eric is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Immunology at KNUST.
