YDA Activities for 2004

Youth Development Association (YDA) and the Bonadikombo Potable Water Scheme.

YDA in mid-March 2004, organized youths from the Bonadikombo community (Limbe Sub-Division) to offer their labour in voluntary service to the Bonadikombo Potable Water Scheme. This service involved the digging of ditches to remove old galvanized pipes and replace them with pressure pipes which carry a higher volume of water.

"Recently there was an outbreak of cholera and diarrhea within the communities of Idenau, and Limbe, located within the Limbe Sub-Division. This outbreak resulted in the loss of many lives, and probably was caused by rust and dirt from poorly constructed water catchments."

Youths of Bonadikombo actively took part in redressing this situation under the canopy of YDA as can be seen from the pictures. Much still has to be done as far as digging of ditches is concerned. It is vital to ensure the proper construction and purification of water catchments and water tanks.

"The Bonadikombo water scheme and many other water schemes do not benefit from government sponsorship, and so the provision of drinking water is left entirely in the hands of these communities and groups like YDA."

Some government-sponsored water schemes such as the Limbe Urban water scheme still do not satisfy the urban population because of the high water bill that has to be paid, and so the common man has to resort to very unsanitary sources for potable water.

Manual digging of ditches is difficult, slow and laborious because of the stony nature of the area but it is vital work for the community.

"The activities of YDA therefore center around rural communities, where there is complete absence of water schemes. As a result of YDA's work, the provision of drinking water is no longer a forgotten and neglected issue."
