My name is Simon Pickup - founder of Youth Hydrogen, an organization dedicated to making North Vancouver the world's first hydrogen based city. Below is my block biography: Nutshell Statement: I can form steel, change lives and troubleshoot windows. I know the art of the deal, the path of leadership and the chemical composition of water. I believe in humility, diversity, strength of character and human rights. My mission is to split molecules and free nations. Guiding Beliefs: I believe, in the words of Jeffrey Sachs (director of the Earth Institute, and the author of “The End of Poverty”), that “…it is our breathtaking opportunity to be able to advance the Enlightenment vision of Jefferson, Smith, Kant and Condorcet…to help foster political systems that promote human well-being, based on the consent of the governed, to help foster economic systems that spread the benefits of science, technology and the division of labor to all parts of the world, to help foster international cooperation in order to secure a perpetual peace, and to help promote science and technology, grounded in human rationality, to fuel the continued prospects for improving the human condition.” I believe, in the words of Jeremy Rifkin (Economic Advisor to the EU) that "…We are on the cusp of a new energy regime that will alter our way of life as fundamentally as the introduction of coal and steam power in the 19th century and the shift to oil and the internal combustion engine in the 20th century. The hydrogen era looms on the horizon and the first major industrial nation to harness its full potential will set the pace for economic development for the remainder of the century." I believe, in my own words, that it is time for Canada to lead by example and set the standard for a peaceful, sustainable society – and I believe I can help shape that future. Business | Leadership: I have sold lemonade, website design and copy services, dress shirts, books and toys - entrepreneurship as a result of spending sixteen years immersed in my family’s manufacturing operation. In the heart of a gizmo factory I learned about margins and velocity, growth, and cash flow. On the ground floor, amongst drill presses and winders, stamping machines and test equipment, I learned to walk. On the top floor I learned to lead. I came to know that a leader executed through others by reaching inwards and pulling out potential. That more than being a hope dealer, profit mechanic or chief visionary a leader was, at the heart of their role, a rock solid example of integrity. It was based on the strength of their character that they engendered trust. And it was with trust that they lead the way. I have what it takes to lead. Science | Technology In grade one I built my first telegraph, in grade two, a motor. From grades three through seven I created anodization kits, metal stamping tools, transformers, switches, galvanometers, multiple hydrogen electrolysers, crude braking mechanisms, and a computer controlled seismograph. In grade eight, I proved that objects in a vacuum fall at the same rate. In grade nine I completed the design work for a tabletop particle accelerator. In grade ten, I pursued a low cost, high efficiency hydrogen generator. This year, in grade eleven, I assembled a complete system that supplies a liter equivalent of hydrogen for $0.47. Next year, this system will form the basis of a hydrogen refueling station. I am working towards demonstrating the viability of running my city on a fuel that doesn’t pollute, in the hopes of setting an example for a world that does. Global Citizenship | Academic Record: In my community, I have organized a youth award ceremony, a thousand attendee conference on sexual health, drug abuse and drunk driving, and a campaign to bring hydrogen to Vancouver. I volunteer at the City Hall of North Vancouver, the Red Cross and Harvest Project. I am the youth ambassador of Smart Growth Canada, the vice-chairman of the Youth Centennial Task Force, President of the North Vancouver Student Leadership Council, and a founding member of the Global Youth Fund. At school I hold down a 98% average. Valued Words: I am not, in the words of Robert Kennedy, “…discouraged by the belief that there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world’s ills – against misery and ignorance, injustice and violence…” Because while “…Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation…It is from the numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, they send a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” I find hope in the words of Phillips Brooks, that…"Some day, in years to come, you will be wrestling with the great temptation, or trembling under the great sorrow of your life. But the real struggle is here, now, in these quiet weeks. Now it is being decided whether, in the day of your supreme sorrow or temptation, you shall miserably fail or gloriously conquer.
