About Me |
Vanessa Brocato works as the International Policy Associate at SIECUS, the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States. In this position, she advocates for people’s access to high-quality, comprehensive sexuality education and for related sexual and reproductive rights. As part of these efforts, she monitors US foreign policy, participates in international proceedings, and serves as a resource for colleagues doing similar work worldwide. She regularly writes and presents on topics such as the importance of sexuality education, the problems with domestic abstinence-only-until-marriage policies, the exportation of abstinence-only-until-marriage overseas, and the radical right movement’s threat to sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide. Audiences have included policymakers, legislative staff, NGO staff, students, and other young advocates. She is particularly commitment to working with youth and has helped to arrange conferences and workshops for young advocates in the U.S. as well as in Belgium, Portugal, and Spain. Prior to working at SIECUS, she worked at a local domestic violence organization in Ghana, where her responsibilities included mentoring Ghanaian student interns and helping them to organize outreach campaigns and to research and write articles on women’s human rights. Vanessa is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, where she was awarded the Bettina E. Pruckmayr Memorial Award for Human Rights.
