The tender age of eight when he lived with his grandparents at Georges Plain in Westmoreland. So eager was he to show his talent that he would gather boxes on which to stand to reach the microphone. At the age of ten Mark’s conviction to become an entertainer became even stronger and he began to vision that one day he would make his own records and tour the world to display his unique singing talent. One important requirement for any musical artistes in Jamaica is the stage name and unlike so many others Mark had one tailor made for him. At school he was called ‘Blacka Shines’, due to the fact that he disliked wearing shirts and as a result most of the time his black shinning skin was noticeable. Mark also adopted this alias as his first stage name, as he saw himself as the shinning star to emerge from the corridors of obscurity, with the melodies and messages to inspire and entertain the masses. While at school he met Yami Bolo and Sian Sam who shared Marks’ interest in music. Shines and Sian Sam would practice singing together for hours at a time. These sessions assisted Shines in the development of his trade mark vocal range/signature which astounded many female patrons who came to see him perform at school functions. SHINES has always been inspired by the heart felt singing of Stevie Wonder however many who have heard him have likened to greats such as; Bob Marley, Jacob Miller, Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown, Luciano, Garnet Silk, Freddy McGreggor. He’s like the male version of SADE’ in reggae music and World Beat, etc. In 1995 Mark ‘ULTIMATE-SHINES’ James was featured in Spragga Benz first album major deal for Capitol Records, USA, entitled: “Uncommonly Smooth” the feature collaboration song titled: ‘GANG RIVAL’, written by Ultimate-Shines and Spragga benz, his first stage name (Blacka-Shines) was use on this project, ‘GANG RIVAL’ got heavy rotation by radio stations in Jamaica, United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, which also featured all time great singer BEN-E-KING. In 1996 March MBP-Promotions and Solid Agency produced the stage show ‘BE STILL BABYLON’ which headline Island recording artiste Yami-Bolo, Carl Dawkins & Junior Dawkins, SHINES, at the Caribbean number One Night Club “the Mirage” located in Liguanea, Kingston, Jamaica at that time in history. At the end of 1996 Mark decided to change his stage name from ‘Blacka-Shines’ to ‘ULTIMATE-SHINES’ in order to avoid any confusion with another artiste, new upcoming Deejay who had the same stage name. ‘ULTIMATE-SHINES’ is now fully charged and ready to unleash his brand of reggae music (singing/songwriting) on the World Wide market place, despite all the ‘Changes’. Ultimate Shines music collection archive with the library of these two commercial sound systems (1) DELLA-SOUL-MOVEMENTS,(2) LA-BENZ, also Ellise Kelly of Irie FM and for Television Footage some local cable and Television Jamaica (TVJ). Now sound systems, radio/television stations, music producers & Promotion agents, Website Publishers/Broadcaster now create for Ultimate Shines a niche marketplace both local and International. When he’s not recording or rehearsing new song that he had pen, Ultimate Shines plays football, and is always on an exercise / fitness programme, he cooks, socializes with families and close associates. Family development and moral building amongst his woman and their children, meditation, reflection on his poor humble past so he can always stay focus on his real goal in life. In 1998 he performed at STING, Morgans Heritage Group who has also worked with Ultimate Shines, invites him every year to perform at the annual ‘EAST FEST’ in St. Thomas, Reggae Fest 2002 a LION Paw Production, Singing Melody Birthday Event CanJam 2002 tour in Canada. He has recorded at many prominent studios and performed in many inner city communities such as Brook Valley, Sherlock Crescent, New Haven, and Maverly. The LP/Album for 2003 is almost complete and will feature the likes of Pam Hall, Ijah-Bones, Dean Fraser, just to name a few, a reggae album with a extra fuse such as ska / rocksteady, world beat. He has International membership to Performing Rights Society (UK), Westbury Music Publisher/Gurr Music. ‘Ultimate Shines’ talent is of Global Ambassadorship stature, especially assisting the Jamaican Entertainment & Tourist Industry.
