During the Middle Ages where there was the lowest level of enrolment and the only way to get an education was to be helped by the church. I mean, even kings were illiterate most of the time. The middle ages were also known as Dark ages and honestly, how can we expect to learn anything without lights on? However, since the schools of Charlemagne, humanity has made gigantic progress with the different methods to transmit our knowledge to the future generations. We’ve made so much that the education is now the bedrock of our modern societies. Back in the days, if you wanted a serious job you had to be the apprentices of a master for several years then become yourself a master in your art. It was a long and hard process with no guaranties that you or your master were even qualified. Now any job is available for anyone, the only action to take is to get a professional training or a diploma in your field of studies. Of course the same level of education can’t be expected around the world but I’m sure that with just a little effort everything can be done. About little effort, there’s a project called One Laptop Per Child and I think it’s the perfect example of a project that require little energy and makes a big difference. The OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) is a non-profit organization that recycles your old computers to make new ones for the kids in the developing world. The project is directed by Nick Negroponte of the M.I.T1. This project is the model of a little effort that each and every one can make to give better education all around the world. As the now very respected Barack Obama said ‘’Yes, We can!’’ 1) http://laptop.org/en/
