About Me   About Me
I am currently a PhD student in Policy Studies at Ryerson University, Toronto. I have an MA from Ryerson and a BA from the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada.

In 2010-2011 I completed a work assignment teaching ESL in Saudi Arabia. In 2008 I was a participant of a Canada-EU Mobility project at the University Malta. I also spent time volunteering at a social housing centre for refugees and asylum seekers. Later that year I completed an internship in Meru, Kenya working with the Muchui Women`s Business Group.

My background in human rights has primarily been with forced migration, refugee protection, and refugee reception.

My interest in human rights comes from the basic fact that all humans are equal regardless of nationality; ethnicity; religion; or other social or economic statuses. In order to ensure equality, all people - and possibly social scientists particularly - should work towards promoting the dignity, respect, and well-being of all individuals. Indeed, the positive health of our society - both local, national, and global - depends on the health and active participation of all its members.

In Canada I have been involved in fund-raising with organizations such as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees; Canadian Cancer Society; and the World University Service Canada.

I have also been active in literacy development and promotion. An article I wrote, "Critical thoughts on critical thinking in Saudi Arabia" can be found here: http://www.opendemocracy.net/bobby-thomas-cameron/critical-thoughts-on-critical-thinking-in-saudi-arabia The article highlights the relationship between critical thought and development.

Most recently I received the 2010 Red Cross Young Humanitarian Award (http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=36188&tid=062) and also the Dan McIntyre Human Rights Award (http://www.ryerson.ca/politics/albums/dan_mcintyre_award.html).

More about my background can be found in an interview from Saudi Arabia with CBC Radio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59usDaO1Q3I
