About Me |
I am the founder and executive director of The Caribbean Institute, a think-do tank in Paramaribo-Suriname. We focus on the promotion of sustainable development in Suriname, working with rural communities on the scale of a district. We believe that real change will only come about if we simultaneously address the political, economic, psychological and cultural dimensions of the persistence of poverty. That is why, in our projects, we work in multi-disciplinary teams of experts, in a radically participatory way with the communities. Currently we have two projects going on: 1) Working with small farmers in the district of Saramacca to make the transition to sustainable agriculture and setting up a cross-border agro production chain. 2) Working in the district of Coronie, which is a huge wetland and meets the Ramsar criteria of a wetland of international importance, to model a process of participatory wetland management and sustainable development.
