David E. Hepburn, is a pop art artist, who was born in Sunderland, England in 1965. His post 1990 monochrome work has proven popular stateside. However, his relationship with his countrymen is somewhat troubled after he famously offended prominent art critics with the commments:
British parasitical critique ride on the backs of artists like men ride mules.
Following this outburst, the 2005 Autumn edition of international art magazine, Paroquial Parody, used the title "On the Backs of Mules" on its front cover. Hepburn has continued to offend the establishment by constantly refusing to allow his work to be exhibited in the UK despite much interest.
"A Mothers Love", perhaps his most famous collection of paintings, featuring three separate paintings of a family of Siberian tigers, recently sold through Parodial Parody for a reputed $78,000, a considerable sum given thay mainstream interest in his work has been relatively recent.
Hepburn's works are mainly in private collections and are highly sought after on rare occasions that they are sold on the open market. Hepburn has paintings hanging in the Residence of the Italian Ambassador to the United Nations in New York. Indeed, David E. Hepburn continues to be said to push the boundaries with his unique style of painting and his straight forward no-nonsense approach to painting is refreshing and welcomed in this all too often closed field.
