A number of Brown University students and myself have committed our semesters to promoting urban debate in conjunction with the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL) and The Weinstein Company, in preparation for the December 25th launch of a major motion picture entitled, The Great Debaters. The film is directed by Denzel Washington and stars Denzel and Forrest Whitaker. Our goal is to use the movie to promote urban debate. Debate is an activity which has largely been overlooked in discussions of after school activities. Debate helps students develop critical reading skills, increase self-esteem, and reduce drop-out rates.
