About Me |
I am a 24 year old gender and HIV/AIDS activist currently working for the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa, serve on the board of Sonke Gender Justice and also work as a consultant to EngenderHealth on the implementation of the Men as Partners Network. I joined the fight against gender based violence and HIV/AIDS in 2003 while studying towards my B.Sc. degree at the University of the Western Cape where I was an HIV/AIDS peer educator and a member of the Men as Partners Network. I have since worked for a number of International organizations including The Global call to Action Against Poverty, CIVICUS, Action Aid and Engender Health. Over the last few years, I have worked as a research assistant on a number of research projects related to men, gender and HIV/AIDS including a study on men's low utilization of voluntary counseling and testing and an ongoing qualitative research project on men, gender based violence and community mobilization. I am an experienced workshop facilitator and public speaker and have presented at a number of international conferences including as part of the opening plenary panel at the 2005 South African Gender Based Violence Conference. I have dedicated my life to change and improve the lives of women and children in South Africa. In recognition my activism I was invited to show a short documentary on my life at the South African Broadcasting Corporation's launch of the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women Campaign and featured on national television. On 25 November 2006, Women Demand Dignity (WDD) - an advocacy/lobbying group based in Cape Town awarded me with a White Ribbon Award for my work in the area of violence against women and children.
