BEST BADDIES INTERNETIONAL Developmental Disabilities (BBI) Global network that Connects people with and without mental retardation or developmental Disabilities ESTABLISHING NEW BRANCH (NATIONAL (CHAPTER) BBI – TANZANIA Best Buddies is a non- profit Organization that Connects people without mental retardation or a development disability .As long as people with disability/mental retardation are not ready integrated into schools, communities and workplaces. Best Buddies Tanzania has a purpose to great friendship that will help to create a strong bords, which benefits both people with and without mental retardation Best Buddies Tanzania hope to grow from one chapter on one High school campus to the whole country and join 600 High school and colleges in USA and Canada, Greece which involving 30,000 participants. Currently there more than 3.5millions of people with mental retardation/developmental disability out of 3.5Millions of Tanzania (According to Tanzania Census 2002). Also 250Millions of people with mental retardation/disability worldwide. If this people (3.5Millions with disabilities in Tanzania) could be paired with 10students in Tanzania and 77Millions High schools and college students worldwide, then the vision of Best Buddies worldwide would be fulfilled. BEGINNING BEST BUDDIES IN TANZANIA Best Buddies began in 1987 by New Chairman Anthony K.Shiver, one of the sons of Eunice Kennedy Shiver, Sister of President John F.Kennedy of USA, By having a family member with mental retardation, Anthony’s Aunt Rosemary, The Kennedy’s family has contributed a great to the improvement of the lives of people with mental retardation. Best Buddies being one of them, Mr. Shriver so the tack opportunity people with mental retardation had to socialize and live with non – disabled peers .As a student at that time he saw students as a great source of energy to bridge the gap between disabled and the not In Tanzania the idea to start this Chapter arose when Mr. Timothy Rashidi Timanywa, ”Coordinator TUJIFUNZE: CENTRE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ‘NGOs ‘ During his private searching on the Internet and Discovered the Best Buddies from that point he developed an Intuitive desire to Initiate a activities that will promote the Establishment of Best Buddies in Tanzania Mr. Timothy Rashidi Timanywa with Mr. Willy Muga together with two teachers from Mirongo and Mwanza High school thought establish Best Buddies Tanzania and expand the program in Lake Victoria zone VISION OF BEST BUDDIES – TANZANIA Best Buddies Tanzania ambitiously envision a world where people with interelectual disabilities are so successfully integrated into our schools, our workplaces and our general communities that our current efforts and services will be unnecessary until that vision becomes a reality MISION Our mission is to educate the Middle schools, high school and college students, community citizens, and corporations, and employers about the emotional, function and natural needs and abilities of the people with mental retardation AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Best Buddies in Tanzania is a vibrant not for profit (NGOs) Organization dedicated to enhance the lives of young people with and without Intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for: 1 One to friendships and integrated employment 2 To produce a dynamic International Movement of student Volunteers from both secondary schools and Universities who meaningfully engage a person with Intellectual disability as a personal friend. 3 To make students in high schools, colleges to increase Understanding of themselves and a more positive feelings about their lives 4 With help students to develop s different perspectives on what is important in life, a more positives altitude about people with Intellectual disabilities 5 To supporting people with Intellectual disabilities living and working in community, schools and Colleges. 6 To promote education people with mental retardation and develop Best Buddies National wide 7 To share successful and Innovate mental retardation education Program in Tanzania 8 To collaborate with relevant government Organs, on-Organization or individuals to establishments information/Education Centre, Organizing, workshops, seminars, comferences and Extihibilions 9 To develop effective tools of communication in dissemination the awareness e.g. Learning/Friendships, through the use of cultural organs etc, music, drama, dances, art, poetry, sports, games, and other firms of audiovisual or print media (cultural exchange). 10 To depend strategies that will enable students with and without mental retardation to collaborate or sit together without segregation. HOW BEST BUDDIES (BBI) TANZANIA WILL WORK. Currently BBI Tanzania has started its operation at Mwanza High School (Student without disabilities) and Mirongo Primary School (Special School). It has 4 persons (Program Coordinator, Program Manager, Faculty Advisor (FA), special education advisor (SEA) ) and 80 students with and without mental retardation. Who carry the program; out of whom there other 4 special schools and Non within Lake Victoria Zone we intend to initiate/establish BBI Tanzania. We expect to form our Board (garving board) according to BBI regulations, whereby members of the board will be drawn from each of the schools, individuals or organization that will accept to collaborate with us, together with local government. The concerned then will work in consultation with their school or the area where the program is in operations. Informs the executive board of any developments in the area he/she represents. School faculty advisor (FEA) and special education advisor/representative of the board together with program manager/coordinator will organize seminars, workshops, and extihibitions in schools. The hosting school (special education schools) will be informed to invite the community local organization e.g. Community based organization (CBO), civil society organization (CSOs), NGO’s, Youth and women groups, and students to the school to share with life experience and establish one – to- one friendship with people with mental retardation. The interest is attributed to Middle School, High Schools, College students and (social groups). So that the new skills can be passed on to the communities and people with mental retardation through them. EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS/CURRENT ACTIVITIES. We expect to create awareness about special education to the people with mental retardation and create one-to-one friendship networking to students and interested individuals (community). We expect to have discussion meetings of management board every sixty days; and the executive (top) once a months; (workshops/training) a year to show culture, sports and games. We expect to work in consultation with local organization (NGO’s) and relevant authorities such as central and local government and best baddies intervention. Lying down an organization workable action plan. FUNDING. BBI – Tanzania is currently operating on its member’s pocket, voluntary contribution and service. It is our hope that same well wishes organization or individuals shall came-up to assist is kind. Also expect to have income from selling various item produced by hand-capped students with their friends (without). Disabilities Also expect to have fundraising at least once a year. PROJECT PLAN Creating Best Buddies awareness to (26) twenty six, expand up to 26 special school and 26 secondary and high school and Colleges in Tanzania To establish Best Buddies Network Information Centre in one of participant regions To supporting the disabled, people with mental retardation disadvantaged communities improve their livelihood through good health and elimination of poverty is well in line with the BBI .it is our sincere hope that we shall work together to make this dream come true To find and Identify Collaborations for their funding or both support Establishing of exchange programs of teaching materials, and other Experiences Initiating joint project in which the member school could participate To establish annual conferences for teachers and students to share their experiences Establishment of Best Buddies Tanzania website, offices of the National Board and the local Magazines and writing periodic organization local newsletters, Best Buddies Tanzania for its dissemination of Information (global forum) Evaluating Organization periodic progress To Volunteers WHAT IS A BUDDY (PEER BUDDY) A Buddy is an Individual with mild to moderate Intellectual disabilities who is paired in a one to one Friendship with secondary, High school or college students for one academic year BEST BUDDIES PROGRAMS Best Buddies provides Socialization opportunities and job coaching, via the tools needed for the people with Interellectual disabilities to become more independent and further included in Community through the following programs, BEST BUDDIES COLLEGES :- Pairs people with Intellectual students without friends and family we are alone .in the past, Individuals with Intellectual disabilities of their own environment .by becoming a college Buddy, Volunteers offer a Buddy the chance to explore a new way life. BEST BUDDIES IN MILD SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOLND SECONDART SCHOOL Works to pair students with and with at Intellection disabilities in one to one friendship, student, have to help, share the same learning space and social interests, however students with intellectual disabilities this cycle, Best Buddies works with these younger students to break through the segregation with friendships. BEST BUDDIES CITIZENS To pair people with intellectual disabilities in one-to-one friendships with other individuals in the corporate and civic communities friends and family which are the foundation that helps.. Without love, support and friends, our lives would be empty a life, people with Intellectual disabilities have been forced to live through out history.. E-BADDIES Is an Innovate program that use e-mail to create professional and new opportunities for working professional and volunteers to interest with people with intellectual disabilities. E-Buddies volunteers are port of a cyberspace community where they develop one-to-one friendship via e-mail and participate in online events such as charts, news groups and more. Best Buddies Jobs is a supported employment program. Its goal is to secive competitive, high paying jobs for people with intellectively disabilities. This program targets potential employers in competitive job sites places individuals in competitive jobs, and promotes an going support and training enabling people with intellect ional disabilities to earn an income, pay taxes and work in an environment along site others in the community.
