Sylvanus S. Murray returned to Sierra Leone after completing an assignment with the United Nations International Criminal Court for Rwanda (www.unictr.org), Arusha, Tanzania from 2008-2016.
Sylvanus founded the Advocacy Initiative for Development (AID). AID is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered in the State of Washington, USA to Support Development Initiatives in Africa. The organization advocates for the rights of humanity and render services for the holistic development of people and their communities.
Sylvanus has been a long TakingITGlobal involved member. He has not only been TIG’s key contact for Sierra Leone but has also initiated or coordinated all TIG activities in the country very successfully.
He took part and played a key role in the development of the CLCWA project. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Web Design & Multimedia, a Master's degree in Mass Communication and a long list of UN training certificates.
Professionally, he has held positions at the UN mission in Sierra Leone, for TakinITGlobal and has many volunteering experiences.
In 2002, he lead successful TIG Youth Day (TYD) celebrations (http://tigurl.org/nvcfr5) in Sierra Leone.
In 2003, he was selected to serve in the TIG Youth Day International Organizing Committee, which among other things was responsible for supporting the coordination of TYD celebrations in local communities. At the same time, the committee kept track of TIG Youth Day events globally, and also day-to-day management.
For over six years Sylvanus worked for the UN Peacekeeping Missions in Sierra Leone - United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) respectively.
He first got an employment experience with the Christian Literature Crusade (CLC) Bookshop, an international organization operating in 52 countries with Headquarters in the UK.
He has been actively involved in youth work at both national and international levels. He has working relationship with several youth organizations in Sierra Leone including umbrella youth organizations such as the Independent Youth Forum (IYF), National Youth Multi-purpose Cooperative Society (NYMCOS), Youth For Christ (YFC), Peace Links, etc. and affiliated with over 15 International youth organizations including the World Assembly of Youth, Youth Link, TeamCE, National Network of Youth Ministries (NNYM), Youth Fire, Pastor2Youth, Youth Noise, TakingITGlobal (TIG), Mandate The Future (MTF), Youth Employment Summit (YES), Kabissa, Youth Reach, Global Youth Network, We Care Too, Earth Charter, International Youth Parliament (IYP) etc.
Sylvanus is a member of the Management Committee of the Youth Employment Summit (YES - www.yesweb.org) Country Network in Sierra Leone. He was part of the Sierra Leone government's delegation that participated in the launching of YES in Alexandria, Egypt in 2002.
He also served as National Coordinator of the UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) National Youth Activities in Sierra Leone - http://tigurl.org/ud6ezi-SL. The WSIS National Youth Activities (www.wsisyouth.org) is an initiative of the WSIS (www.wsis.org).
Sylvanus lead the Sierra Leone youth delegation to the first phase (Geneva) of the WSIS summit which was hosted by the government of Switzerland in 2003.
Mr. Murray is the Executive Coordinator of Earth Charter Sierra Leone (ECSL). The ECSL (www.earthchartersl.net) seeks to have people in Sierra Leone putting the Mission of the Earth Charter Initiative into action together with their peers and communities.
Also, Sylvanus was the founding Coordinator of the Earth Charter Youth Group (ECYG) in Sierra Leone. The ECYG is an initiative of the Earth Charter Youth Initiative (ECYI). ECYGs are working to establish a sound ethical foundation for the emerging global society and to help building a sustainable world based on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. He was a member of the Earth Charter Youth Initiative (ECYI) Core-group. The core-group was made up of volunteers from all over the world. The group is responsible for the coordination of the ECYI activities around the world.
In November 2005, he attended the Earth Charter+5 event in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The event was to celebrate accomplishments of the Earth Charter Initiative over the past 5 years, share experiences, and launch a new phase of the Initiative.
Between July and August 2006, Sylvanus represented the Earth Charter Youth Group in Sierra Leone (ECYG-SL) and YEDEM International at the Compassionate World Youth Conference (28-30 July) organised by the Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM) and the Immersion Youth Camp (31 July - 12 August) organised by the Taiwan Ecological Stewardship Assiociation (TESA) in Taiwan.
In December, 2007, Sylvanus received a scholarship to represent the TakingITGlobal (TIG) Creating Local Connections West Africa (CLCWA) programme at the GK3 conference (http://tigurl.org/26opsd) organised by the Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP) in Kualalumpur, Malaysia.
Countries visited: Liberia, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Gambia, Guinea, Congo, DR, Zambia, France, Belgium, South Africa, Switzerland, Netherlands, India, Thailand, Taiwan, UAE, Malaysia and Tanzania.
