ANNUAL REPORT 2006 – 2007

BACK GROUND:

Srinivasa Urban & Rural Youth Association (SURYA) established in 1995 has been working for the uplift and welfare of the Women & Children since 1995. Its interventions are at the grass root level and people based with the focus on women & Children. The target communities are treated as participants and partners and women are given maximum opportunities. SURYA is particular that the most oppressed and suppressed women widely participate in all the activities to gain experience, expertise, equality and equity-leading to empowerment.

VISION:
SURYA ' s VISION IS A 'Just social order' wherein the rights and liberties of all human beings are protected with egalitarian order.
 To generate awareness and organize the weaker sections of the society towards socio-economic-educational empowerment, and integrated development.
 To generate health awareness and to promote community health.
 To render effective aid to the children for their rights and integrated development.
 To protect, conserve, promote and manage eco environmental balance and generate skills and economic ventures to be eco friendly.
 To rehabilitate mentally retarded and physically challenged children.
 To take steps for HIV/AIDS prevention, control and rehabilitation of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs)

Mission:
The major mission of SURYA is to fight against poverty, to develop the disempowerd like street children, women, old age people, beggars, and disabled in all aspects such as education, economical, health, recreational and rehabilitation with the help of philanthropists, Central, State Governments and various research foundations.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:
The SURYA had its modest beginning with Indian Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and Foreign Contribution Regulation Act 1976. After careful observation of SURYA and its yeoman service to the poor and needy, the I.T. Department has exempted under section 12 (A) and 80 (G) of I.T. Act 1961.
It has a General body cum Executive committee or Governing board of nine members including 5 women. They are elected to various offices once in three years. The Chairmen, Secretary and Treasurer are authorized to operate the accounts Jointly which are audited by a Chartered Accountant once in year and filed with the Registrar of the Societies, Annual Returns For Income Tax Department and Ministry of Home Affairs annually. Also copies are sent, to the donor agencies

Educational Services

Crèche Centers : – 27 Creche centers are running at Andhrapradesh, Tamilnaadu & Karnataka states with Central Social Welfare Board NewDelhi with financial Assistance. 0-5 years age group children numbering 800 are take care of annually. They are given primary education, supplementary nutrition, and health care measures.

Adult literacy center : - Women literacy is very important factor. The women has to assume many a roles in every day life that is mother, sister, mother-in-law and the most important role as a wife. If the women are illiterate then there are many disadvantages to her as also to the family. The "SURYA" is providing education they called Akshra Sankranti Centres with the aim of dropouts becoming sought outs. Dedicated volunteers, teachers and instructors are taking care of the programme.

Medical Camps :
A medical team consisting of eminent doctors like Dr Ranganayakulu and medical workers are rendering services in health camps. 54 medical and health camps were held in different slum areas of Tirupati municipality & Srikalahasthi Municipality. Along with check-ups, medicines are distributed; pamphlets were distributed for awareness generation and benefiting more than 8,500 people.

Mobile Medicare: - Dr.P.V.RamaRao with the team of Para-medicals rendered services to senior citizens in Tirupati Rural and nearby Renigunta. A hired mobile van is used and emergency cases are referred to retoral hospitals.

Pulse Polio: - The SURYA has actively participated in pulse polio programmes
on 08-01-2007 and 22-02-2007 by motivating the parents. More than 450 Children
Benefit this Programme.

Vocational Trainings
Under Income generating activities, the vocational training has been given to the Youth, women and other needy people. After completion of training, loan is arranged through the micro credit, in order to start a small-scale (home) industry, with minimal interest rate. Some women have successfully utilized this facility and are working towards better economic status in the society. Along with the training they are exposed to marketing, leadership qualities, accounting, garment making, radio & T.V. Mechanism, screen printing, motor-rewinding, computer training was taken up benefiting 100 unemployed youth. 35 successful candidates have been shown placements through career guidance cells.

Awareness Programmes
Sensitization programmes on varied topics such as nutrition and dietetics, women empowerment, traffic safety, environment, new vistas on agriculture, HIV / AIDS, were undertaken through films and street plays attracting 5600 rural people.

Nutrition and balance Diet : - On 3-5-2006 an awareness camp on mal nutrition and balance diet to pregnant women were conducted by covering 35 villages of Tirupati Rural, Nindra & Nagari Mandals

Women Empowerment: - The main objective of this programme is to create awareness among the Urban & Rural women in the villages. In commemoration of Women's day 8-3-2006 an awareness camp and workshop was conducted. Smt.B.Rajeswari Social Worker addressed the trainees and Family Counseling to needy Women. 350 SHG leaders have participated.

Road safety: - Due to fast industrialization and urbanization Tirupati a pilgrim paradise has become accident-prone town. A training programme for drivers, scooterists, and rickshaw pullers for 3 days was conducted 11-12-2006.On exposures of traffic rules and to avoid accidents etc. In this programme 300 Drivers have been benefited.

Environmental Awareness : - In commemoration of World Environmental Day, on 05-6-2006, the SURYA celebrated pollution Free Environment Programme. Nearly 600 people have attended and samplings were planted. We have distributed 10,000 phamplets, promoted and motivated for planting at every house and in the premises of Govt institutions etc,

Latest methods on agriculture: - Latest methods were disseminated in like of Kisan Diwas. (Farmer's day – 23-12-2006.) 10 farmers from each village represented 30 villages. Dr. Mrs. Krishna Rao, Dy. Dir, Agriculture have explained new techniques in agriculture and explained the importance of varmi compost technology to all the farmers to implement in their cultivated lands, so as enable them to fertile the land for better yield.

AIDS / HIV : - In view of World's Aids day (1.12.2006) an awareness camp and workshop under the able guidance of some doctors Dr. A. MohanaKrishna, Dr. Ranganayakulu was conducted. High-risk groups like drivers, rickshaw pullers, and sex-workers were covered. Free condoms were distributed, and examined 450 taxi drivers, rickshaw pullers, lorry drivers, sex workers at Tirupati Urban slum areas and national highways.

REHABILITATION PROGRAMME

Rehab 2006 : - An innovative programme was conducted by SURYA. Like supply of books and cloths to poor children helping poor and needy. If any sponsors come forward the organisation is ready to diversity its activities.

Legal Literacy : -We have arranged for conducting of Legal Awareness Camp for Women. The programme was conducted with effect from 1.4.2005 to 31.3.2006. Total 3500 women and girls have attended the programme. The objectives of the programme:

FAMILY COUNSELLING CENTRE

The SURYA has a center Sponsored By C.S.W.B, New Delhi, located at Nagari, which is 50 Kms from Tirupati. It is a peculiar town, which is a border with between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Due to cultural differences, this area is suicide prone and families are disturbed at large. The cases of divorce, disputes and family related problems are high. Some of the cases of divorce for want of mediation have been tackled by this organization. This is through expert counselors comprising a psychologist and sociologist. Where mediation failed, women who were neglected will be provided vocational training including food, clothing and shelter. Referring them to different organizations based on their needs has provided guidance .

Other Programmes

Water Harvesting: SURYA have conducted water-harvesting programme on 15-11-2006 at Nagari and Tirupati Rural mandals. Nearly 450 youth cultivators (farmers) grass root level workers, social workers, teachers, community leaders, mandal resource persons have attended the programme for two days. Dr. Krishna Rao Deputy Director, Agriculture lead the camp. The acute problems in respect of water resources and the consequences have been registered to the people and its rectification to improving the level of water utilizing rain water and recycling of domestic water to be syphind to the peculation pits to over come the water problem.

National and International days: The organization is also celebrating National and International days .In its project areas like health day, Women's day, AIDS day and Independence day by conducting different competitions to the rural people and distributed prizes also.

Future Plans

SURYA plans to start DAYA NILAYAM in Tirupati. In this Nilayam Providing Trainings to poor & needy, home for Aged, Orphan Home, Short Stay Home, Education to Disabled, and Counselling Center. The Home for the aged is must in our society, for the joint family culture no longer exists and nucleus families have come into existence. The younger ones do not provide for the love and care required by these elders and desertion is on the increase. These senior citizens require a quite, homely, loving atmosphere to lead a happy retired life.
