“Janeiro”, the Portuguese word for January, the very first month of the year signifying new beginnings, thus Wanda and Glen Bullard found it no more than fitting to name their first child after the Portuguese month and Brazilian city. Born in 1984, Janeiro Bullard started is primary education very early at the age of 4 at the Mable Walker Primary School in 1989 where he always displayed a profound interest in science and how things worked, so he was very active in the science club and scored well in all science related subject. Janeiro then graduated from primary school to attend the Government High School, where he continued his scientific pursuits as his career goal was to become a Genetic Engineer. However at this time Janeiro also developed a love for Youth Work, adolescent health advocacy and community work. He joined the Key club, the Junior Achievement program, The Student Christian Movement, The Governor General’s Youth Award, The Torchbearers Association (youth branch of governing political party) and the Junior Red Cross. Also in the 10th grade Janeiro Bullard and a group of young persons founded the Adolescent Health Desk, which serves as the youth arm of the Adolescent Health Clinic-Nassau, Bahamas.
During his senior years Mr. Bullard also demonstrated a wealth of leadership capabilities as he was voted Vice President of his Red Cross Link, Student Council’s 10th and 11th grade chair, President of the Youth Advocacy Movement and subsequently appointed as the youth Representative on The Executive Board of the Bahamas Family Planning Association. Throughout his voluntary working experience with the Family Planning Association he was trained in Adolescent Health, Peer Leadership skills, and Facilitating training and health initiatives/ Monitoring and Evaluating programs by PANCAP and Advocacy Skills. In the year 2001 he also served as a youth Parliamentarian. He joined the Royal Bahamas Police Force Cadet Program, which aided him in becoming a more holistic and disciplined individual. Despite being involved with so many extra curricular activities Janeiro remained on the honor roll in his senior years and won numerous academic awards such as 1st runner up in both the schools science and mathematics competitions and winner of the Police Cadet’s speech competition. He also accomplished a number of community initiatives such as the abstinence by choice campaign in which numerous churches, schools and community groups participated in adolescent health workshops. During his graduation year he was also selected as a part of the elite fraternal organization, the Gentleman’s club. Also the following year Mr. Bullard represented the Bahamas at the Commonwealth Youth Program in Jamaica.
On September 22nd 2002, Janeiro Bullard was enlisted to the Royal Bahamas Police Force as Police Constable 2684 in which he underwent seven months of tedious grueling and intense training. However Mr. Bullard never lost interest or his passion for youth work as during his tenure in the Royal Bahamas Police Force he has worked in the Urban Renewal Department and is now currently attached to the Neighborhood /Community Policing section where he continues to formulate youth initiatives within the Nassau for at risk youth, such as Peer Leadership Workshops, Anti Drug initiatives and Adolescent health seminars. The PANCAP initiative also recognized Mr. Bullard’s Peer Leadership Program within the Bain /Grants Town Nassau, Bahamas. In its fight against the spread of HIV AIDS. Also currently serves as the National Focal Point for the Bahamas in GYCA the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/ AIDS
Janeiro’s hobbies include public speaking, youth work, meeting people, traveling, jogging, reading and browsing the web. Throughout his life Mr. Bullard has lived by a premise, which is a quote by the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “What determines a real leader is not where he stands on issues of comfort or convenience but where he stands on issues of challenge and controversy.
