On June 7, 1995, Samuel, at the age of 3.5, came to the United States of America. He lived briefly in Boston, Massachusetts before settling down in Cambridge and he is currently an 11th grade student at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Samuel became well-known after his first “public debut” through the Boston Ethiopian Community Radio. He had an extensive interview with the organization’s executive director and host about his life, trips to Ethiopia and motivation for founding an organization. He became high-profiled and gained world recognition after appearing on the Voice of America Amharic Service. On VOA, he discussed about maternal health issues, specifically fistula and youth involvement in Ethiopia. Samuel had also appeared on the Voices of Abyssinia television program that is shown in the Boston area. Voices of Abyssinia (now, African Television Network of New England) had a one-hour live interview with Samuel. Samuel was invited again to the African Television Network two times afterward. Aside from being a student, Samuel is the Founder and Chairman of the Ethiopian American Youth Initiative (EAYI), a US-based nonprofit for Ethiopians and Americans who are interested in Ethiopia’s culture, fundraising for developmental initiatives and social networking. On Sunday, April 2, 2005, Samuel established an ad-hoc group called The Ethiopian Team which raised enough money to sponsor 11 Ethiopian women for fistula surgery at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. EAYI picked up where his previous group left off and has developed into a youth-led nonprofit. He has dedicated his time and efforts to be the backbone of the organization and to ensure its sustainability. Today, his organization is growing as more attention is being given to EAYI. His hobbies include writing, reading, history and “Ethiopianism.” Samuel is a member of other organizations as well as a Board Member and Advisor to many others.
