By partnering with existing schools, organizations and artistic groups in the regions we visit, The Small Miracles Project seeks to maximize sustainability, efficiency and the safety of all participants. When pioneering projects in locations without an existing contact, thorough research and pre-project planning will be conducted. Participating artists will be granted fellowships, which cover travel to the site, room and board, and the necessary materials for their approved lesson plan. Additional small stipends will be awarded based on individual budgets and proposals to fund the artist’s own work while in residency with SMP. We will also seek to employ local individuals as translators and assistants whenever appropriate. Each international project will culminate in an exhibition of student work in an urban center near the project base, along with whatever fellows’ work is completed at this time. An additional exhibition of teacher and student art will take place in New York City following completion of the project. These will serve as a way to educate the public about the lives and cultures of student participants, and as a fundraising event for future projects. Thus far, projects have been completed solely in the Americas – with pilot projects in the village of El Polvo, El Salvador and other Latin American countries through work with the Latin American Community Art Project and Lo Curativo. The next goals of the organization include expanding our reach into Middle Eastern, Asian and African countries – with the next target areas being Pakistan in Asia and Senegal, West Africa. SMP is also exploring the option of working with pediatric AIDS and cancer patients domestically and abroad. The Small Miracles Project is not religious or political in nature, and does not seek to further any religious or political agenda. Nor do we seek to impose a particular aesthetic or set of artistic values. Our purpose is to facilitate the mutual enrichment of teachers and students, and increase dialogue between neighbors in an increasingly small world through the universal language of creative expression.
