What I'm passionate about (and I guess really why I signed up with TIG) is best summed up in the term 'international development'. For as long as I can remember I have been interested in human rights, democracy, peace, conflict etc any why some places have these things and others don't. As Í got older I've become more specific about these things (for example my main passions now are promoting education and literacy, advocating for debt relief and for first world countires to meet their aid pledges, and advocating for human rights - particularly in terms of free expression and free and fair elections), and tried to become more invovled in practical ways like through Amnesty International. To a cynic this might all sound a bit cliche or naive, I don't know. But I guess where I'm coming from on this is that my mother's family has experienced persecution and political expression and ultimately exile from their native country. Although I was raised in NZ, I've always been keenly aware of what was taking place in other countries and have always been encouraged to get involved in ways that will give other people the same opportunities that I've been able to have. Okay, so that's a bit about my passions. On a completely different tangent, my hobbies and interests... I love music and playing the piano. I'm also into films (A Very Long Engagement is my current favourite) and books (just finished The Mitford Girls). Exercise wise I like swimming and pilates, and have just taken up running (am currently at the less running, more puffing stage). Whew! I think that's enough of a ramble! |
