About Me |
Student at the University of Western Ontario in London. Director of "Bike for AIDS" for World University Services of Canada (WUSC - Western Chapter). Bike for AIDS is an initiative set forth by WUSC to raise money to purchase bikes for AIDS workers in Malawi, Africa. The bikes are then used by the workers to visit AIDS paitients and children orphaned by AIDS -- nearly 4x the number of people they could reach without the bikes. Last year, we had a great concert and bike-a-thon, and were able to raise $7,500 (we organized it in 3 weeks!). This year, we're hoping for something bigger and better.
My focus turned to AIDS after my cousin, fresh from Queens University after receiving his degrees in both Nursing and International Development, accepted a position in Lesotho, Africa, at an AIDS hospital (you may have seen this hospital featured on "The Nature of Things" on the CBC). Hearing his stories and seeing the pictures he took while he was there really affected me, and really changed my life. He's actually still over there, and is returning in just over a month after living there for one year and making such a huge difference in the quality of care the patients receive. As a result, my family has actually started a scholarship fund for children orphaned by AIDS in the village my cousin is in, which pays for the tuition and books of nearly 20 kids. We throw bi-annual parties (called "Martini Madness"), and invite all these business people from Toronto to attend... it's all for a really great cause.
