My name is ISIAKA AKANNI WAHAB THE PRESIDENT /FOUNDER OF SENSITIZE, ACT & ACHIEVE LUMINARY FORUM (SAALF) a youth - led organisation working both in the rural area of Oyo state Nigeria.A Medical Laboratory Technician.
ORGANIZATION’S PROFILE: Sensitize, Act and Achieve Luminary Forum (SAALF) is a Youth led organization founded in 2004 in response to the high increase of disease among the youth of the world. It was officially launched by the Executive Governor of Oyo State on the 26th November, 2005 with the aim of Sensitizing and Improving the Status our teeming youth’s population on global health issues, education, social and economic majority of whom are not aware or bother about the global health issues. It membership comprises mainly those who are interested in creating, promoting and supporting awareness and action for global health issues, social, education and economic status of Youth in our communities mostly youth in the higher institution of learning and secondary school students. Its motto: “Reaching the unreached youth” Mission statement: “Educated and healthy youth will contribute greatly and effectively to the development of their communities”. Aims and Objectives: The organization’s objectives are: - a. To create, promote and sustain awareness on global health issues among the youth using entertainment as a vehicle. b. To educate general public and specific groups such as faith – based audiences, medical professional, the private sector, political officer’s opinion, leaders and the student on the importance of youth in policy and opinion making. c. To carryout free medical laboratory tests for the youths e.g. HIV, Hepatitis, Genotype, Blood grouping etc. d. To make youth participation effective, not decorative, this can be so by integrate youth into the organizational structure. e. To advocate for youth rights and to build a bridge of understanding and confidence between the youths, stakeholders, and government on matters affecting youth and national development, and this will seek a positive orientation of national and international policies towards the attainment of these objectives. f. To organize social and educational programmes such as health debates, quiz, showing of educative films and other programme that will keep youth of the communities mentally healthy and physically alive and active. g. To organize youth empowerment programmes. h. To go into the world and work in partnership with other NGOs, CBOs, Youth saving organization etc to implement our programmes and theirs. OUR RESOLVE SAALF therefore resolves in the light of its stated objectives and in co-operation with other groups sharing beliefs to remain in the front rank of this advocacy at all times. To this end, it will give strong support to the secondary school students, students of higher citadel of learning and similar institutions and international youth organizations in their effort to contribute to total capability for youth self – reliance. 4. ORGANISED YOUTH VOICE OUT SUMMIT ON HIV/AIDS 2007.
5.THE COORDINATOR OF INTERNATIONAL AIDS CANDLE LIGTH MEMORIAL IN IBADAN FROM 2003 TILL DATE.
6. THE COORDINATOR OF YOUTH HEALTH TOUR 2005/6,2006/7 TO THE RURAL AREAS OF OYO STATE
7. Official launching of SAALF by the Executive Governor of Oyo State in the 26th November 2005 at the State Capital which gives room for more youth to join the organization and more recognitions. 8. Founder/President won scholarship to participate in the 14th International Conference on HIV/AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) 2005, in which the president and some SAALF members participate effectively in the various programmes. 9. Organized youth tour to the rural local government council of Oyo State in December 2005 in which during the youth tour SAALF members organized Irepo Youth Health Week in Kisi an ancient town where majority don’t know much about HIV/AIDS with the theme “Youth Voice Out information our right abstinence our duty, virginity African’s pride” and at the end the traditional rulers, political officials, religious leaders, student, associations and farmers association all agree to join the fight against AIDS. The programme last for eight (8) days running from 26th December 2005 – January 2, 2006. Featured: a. mass rally and information dissemination rally b. Films shows “HIV positive voices” – The truth about abortion c. Community Programme d. Youth round table discussion e. Religious leaders capacity building workshop f. Seminar for barbers and hair dresser. iv. Co-ordinated the International AIDS candlelight Memorial in Ibadan where Youth delegates from all the (33) local governments of Oyo State came together, this gave the Oyo State youth opportunity for each of us to dedicate ourselves for the first time to the fight against AIDS. This make youth delegates to promise that we shall join together in our commitment to continue our fight against AIDS until the pandemic is over for all people everywhere. Other achievements include: 1. Creating of chapter in the following schools (i) School of Hygiene Eleyele Ibadan (ii) Queens of Apostle Commercial Grammar School Oluyoro, Ibadan (iii) Kisi Community Grammar School, Kisi (iv) Ladoke Akintola University of technology Ogbomoso (v) School of Medical Laboratory Sciences Oluyoro, Ibadan (vi) The Polytechnic, Ibadan. 2. Organized inter-secondary school health debate in Irepo Local Government Areas. 3. Participated in Mokola Youth Carnival 2005 (guest speaker on “HIV and YOUTH”) delivered by the founder. 4. Participated in the Association of Medical Laboratory technology Students of Nigeria (AMELTSON) Health Week 2005 (Guest Speaker (Onome Kuyebi) on “It’s yours and mine to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. 5. Organized free medical laboratory tests (blood grouping for the Irepo Youths during their health week 2005 organized by SAALF. 6. Organizing public health lectures for the followings: a. Ratib Central Mosque: Every Friday till date b. Club house in Irepo Local Government Area every month till date. c. Sex workers in Irepo Local Government Area every third Friday of the month. d. Worked with the condom project to implement their project “stopping stigmatization about condom in December 2005 at Abuja the Federal capital of Nigeria during ICASA programme 7. Trained 40 youth peer educators now working with SAALF, this make our work easier and gives our member sense of belonging and to make their participation effective not decorative.
