About Me |
I think the critical issues of human sustainability through the 21st century are how the cultures/people of Latin America, Africa and the Middle East can succeed in a globalized economy and social order. Their traditional cultures were effectively desroyed by Western colonolism. they are now being asked by the same western powers to particpate in the new global economy. But if Asia is capable and poised to be the 21st centuryworld industrial producer and tech center. And these areas cannot compete- what will their role be beyond providing natural resources/raw materials? How will they produce wealth (excess goods and services) for themselves? If they can't succeed, can the rest of the world? (think of the middle east now). the second issue is, the enviornment. Assuming globalization continues and the developing world increases per capita income and wealth. they cannot emulate the west in building transportation, sanitation, waste and other modern infrasructures, because these enviornmentally distructive practices will not scale. But what model will these societies use to improve their material lives? Can they be told "No , you can't have what the west has."
