The Crossroads Teen AIDS Ambassadors are educator-activists from Los Angeles, California, trained at the UCLA AIDS Institute, working towards the eradication of HIV/AIDS. This cadre of motivated teenagers is in the business of persuading others to join the global fight against AIDS, which they believe is the moral crisis of their generation. A founding member of the Coalition for a Sustainable Africa (www.csafrica.org), the Teen AIDS Ambassadors are confronting the AIDS pandemic by educating peers and by partnering with agencies in Los Angeles and NGOs in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2006, the Ambassadors partnered with the TunaHAKI Foundation in Moshi, Tanzania and Twana Twitu in Migwani, Kenya. They provided homes for the nine child acrobats from TunaHAKI who visited the United States to receive additional training, and to raise awareness and funds for their new center. The Ambassadors attended the Third Multi-Sectoral AIDS Conference in Tanzania to learn more about the HIV/AIDS situation in East Africa and partnered with several African agencies while they were in East Africa, performing HIV awareness programs in Moshi, Arusha, and Kibera.
The Ambassadors are the only peer-education program backed by the UCLA AIDS Institute, which provides the science-based materials that the AIDS Ambassadors use when they make presentations.
The program’s ultimate goal is the eradication of HIV/AIDS, and its mantra, "Knowledge Is Power"—the more you know about how HIV is transmitted, the safer you are. We believe that every person needs this information, because every sexual encounter is potentially an encounter with the most deadly virus humankind has ever encountered.
