About me
Hello my name is Preston R. Coston, Jr. and I am a Computer Resource Coordinator working for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. For over 4 years I have been blessed to serve the community of the Lower East Side at the Alfred E. Smith Recreation Center located at 80 Catherine St.
During this time, I have helped the community of the Lower East Side bridge the “Digital Divide” to compete into today’s world. As an instructor, age is not an issue for me. I have taught students ranging in age from 6 to 86 years old. And I can honestly say that sharing knowledge with anyone that wants to learn is the most fulfilling job that one can have. I never would have thought when I started this job that I would have found my calling. I wish that I would have discovered this kind of joy on a professional level ten or fifteen years ago.
But I know now that everything happens for a reason. Because of my past work experiences and education I have so much more to bring to the table as a computer instructor to my students.
If I hadn’t worked at the New York Stock Exchange I never would have been able to teach teens how to make a website using Dreamweaver. If I never worked at Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein I’m not sure if I would have picked up Photoshop to teach to my seniors. As I stated before everything happens for a reason.
Four years of going to the School of Visual Arts, Majoring in Illustration and Minoring in Cartooning, Working at the Stock Exchange and in Fashion prepared me for the field that I am in now and for that I am grateful. Because without my prior work experiences and education all I could probably offer to my students is how to use the Microsoft Office Suite and the internet.
With the software that is out there now there is no limit to what a person can do. A child can see his or her characters come to life using Adobe Flash or After Effects. A senior can be shown how to see his grandchild for the first time using Skype. A teen can learn how to create a socially conscious documentary using Adobe Premiere Elements, iMovie or Final Cut Pro. All of these things I have been blessed to teach to my members. This is a great job.
So in closing to sum up who I am, my name is Preston R. Coston, Jr. and I offer students innovative learning experiences using multimedia to help plant the seeds for them to create.
Thank you.
