Career History
2006/2007: Reinhard Mohn Fellow for the period 2006/2007.
• Gütersloh, Germany: Stayed for two and half months during the Reinhard Mohn Fellowship - for induction (presentations by Bertelsmann senior management staff, workshops and seminars, personal visits to Bertelsmann divisions in Germany and the UK), before placement to Bertelsmann Media Worldwide overseas divisions.
• New York, USA: Stayed for five and a half months. Worked with Bertelsmann, Inc. in the Ethics and Compliance Department, researched and helped to develop a global business code of conduct for the company’s subsidiaries / divisions worldwide.
• New York, USA: Guest speaker at the New York University
• New York, USA: Worked with Bertelsmann Recruiting Services, Inc. Worked with the team to organize seminars and workshops and helped to market the company’s services and products through the workshops and on the Internet. Researched and updated Myfuture website for the company.
• Sidney, Australia: Stayed for two months. Worked with Random House Australia, solicited staff opinions and came up with viable proposals recommending the company to get involved in community initiatives and become a more sustainable engaged company, contributing fully in creating responsible communities. Came up with recommendations for a corporate social responsibility program for the company.
• London, UK: Stayed for two months. Worked together with other fellows at FreemantleMedia UK and researched on and helped to implement a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program for the company.
2004:
Baltimore, Maryland, USA: Senior Fellow in the International Philanthropy Fellows Program at The Johns Hopkins University. The topic of his research paper was “Influencing sustainable change by empowering communities through participation in project implementation”.
1998:
He co-founded Learning and Development Kenya (LDK) in 1998 and he is its current Director. He also co-founded Partners for Progress (PfP), another local NGO in 1996 and remained on its board till 2007.
From 1995 – 1997:
Tanzania: Worked for an International Relief Organization (International Rescue Committee - IRC) then being funded by UNHCR with programmes for Burundian and Rwandese refugees in Tanzania in the positions of Administrator and Logistics officer in field offices (Kasulu and Kibondo offices respectively) before being transferred to head office (Kigoma) as country Logistics Manager. He also represented IRC in UNHCR meeting relating to logistics and assets donated by UNHCR for IRC's projects as well as coordinated the feeding programme with World Food Programme field staff.
From 1990 – 1995:
He worked with an International Development Organization (Inter Aid International) in Kenya holding positions of: Accountant/Logistics officer; Office Manager and Head of Finance and Administration (Overall position in the Nakuru office).
He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) graduate with additional training in management.
From 1987 to 1990:
He worked with two different manufacturing firms in Nairobi as an accountant.
International conferences attended
November 2005: He participated in the Selection Conference of the Reinhard Mohn Fellowship in Berlin, Germany.
July 2003: He attended Johns Hopkins International Fellows conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
December 2001: He attended the Second World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Yokohama, Japan.
September, 2001: He was selected to participate at the Information Technology in Regional Areas (ITiRA) Conference at Central Queensland University, Australia, where he presented a paper on "ITC Integration in Social and Economic Development".
June 2000: He was sponsored to participate in the Geneva 2000 Forum - the next step in social development in Geneva, Switzerland.
October 1999: He attended International Conference of NGOs in Soul, South Korea where he organized a workshop on pre-school education in Kenya reflecting on the activities of Learning and Development Kenya (LDK) concerning education of children, including street children.
Publications
He is an author of several conference papers and a co-author of a book “Closing the Digital Divide”, that was published in the United States by the Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc. and edited by Professor Xinghuo Yu, Professor Stewart Marshall and Dr. Wal Taylor, all from Central Queensland University, Australia.
He also participated in the electronic forum that was organized by the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) from 8 September to 3 November 2000 on "Reforming European Development Cooperation: What do the practitioners think?”. Part of his contribution to the discussion can be found in the ECDPM Discussion paper No. 23 on pages 15 and 16) "message sent by NGO representative from Kenya".
