My name is Carolanne Makakaufaki and I'm the founder and Director of Pacific Island Women United (PIWU).

PIWU is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that is working for the empowerment, education and gender equality of Pacific Island Women in New Zealand and the sub-region.

We all know that everywhere around the world, girls and women have always been second class citizens especially in matters of human rights and gender equality. In New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands, it is no different for Pacific Island women are still struggling to claim their rights and to live lives free of violence.

Many of our Pacific Island cultures have degraded our worth as women. And in some cases it is a lot worse. For example, in some Pacific Island countries it is legal for a husband to rape his wife. You would think that in this day and age this would not exist anymore but it does.

PIWU believes that Pacific Island women should have equal opportunities as men or be treated as equals. PIWU is about working for the empowerment, education and gender equality of Pacific Island women.

One voice alone won't make a difference but PIWU with a UNITED VOICE for a UNITED CAUSE will make a dynamic difference.

PIWU is many people with ONE VOICE.

One Voice to EMPOWER.

One Voice to EDUCATE.

One Voice to CHANGE.

One Voice to HELP.

One Voice to MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
