I'm rather bookish by nature, so I had always expected my passion for infectious diseases to take a more research-oriented turn. It has become increasingly clear to me, however, that finding a cure for a disease is meaningless if that cure cannot be made available to all of those who need it. Take HIV/AIDS. It is causing a continent to implode. It unquestionably threatens global horizons. The fact is, we are long past the point of indifferent quarantine; too far gone to plead ignorance. I feel myself obliged to act now, and more concretely than laboratory work alone can afford.
At the same time I am also interested in the Nanjing Massacre of World War II, popularly known as the Rape of Nanking. As a Chinese, I have grown up with this incident in my subconscious and am therefore seeking Japanese perspectives on the matter, especially given the recent Sino-Japanese tensions.
