Payal has joined GYCA as an intern for the summer '07. Her interest in HIV/AIDS issues was sparked when she was an undergraduate at Wellesley College. At Wellesley she studied Economics and International Relations, with a concentration in international development. In several classes, she studied HIV/AIDS issue in sub-Saharan Africa, and also got involved with the Student Global Aids Campaign Boston Chapter.
Payal has worked with several NGOs in various facets of human rights and development issues. Most recently, she spent 6 months in Ahmedabad, India, working with two NGOs in the areas of education and slum development. There, the taught English and trained local staff in computers, as well as worked on various management and fundraising projects.
Payal has travelled extensively, through study abroad experiences during college, as well as internship experiences in Costa Rica and India. She will begin an M.A. in International Development Studies at George Washington University in September 2007. There she will focus on the issue areas of education, community development, and NGO management.
