At the age of 17, Paulo started his collaboration with AJPAS, Associação de Jovens Promotores da Amadora Saudável (Amadora’s Youth Association on Health Promotion), working on a project that aimed at surveying the community in a door-to-door questionnaire in order to map out the health needs among the most socially excluded neighborhoods. In AJPAS Paulo worked as a volunteer and became board member and project coordinator. This challenge meant that Paulo had the chance to carry out a diverse range of community trainings and activities, school interventions and actions to provide support to those living or affected by HIV/AIDS. Over the past years, Paulo actively worked with different interventionist groups on HIV/AIDS and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, engaging in networks and partnership projects. As a volunteer, Paulo organised several campaigns with the main objective of raising HIV/AIDS awareness among the migrant community. For that purpose, Paulo gave his collaboration in the training of new volunteers, as well as in the design and conception of materials to be use at the community level. He took the initiative of implementing sessions for youth groups on the fight against discrimination and social exclusion in Portugal and internationally, namely in the Netherlands and in Cyprus, addressing the definition of stigma and discrimination, sharing examples of projects and strategies to address and overcome stigma and self-stigma. Those sessions include a special focus on how we can promote change and break the taboos on our communities and in the groups where we belong. International Projects on HIV/AIDS Paulo worked as a coordinator in the “European Partnership between Health Actors and African Communities for HIV/AIDS prevention”. The European Partnership Project aimed to develop community-based HIV/AIDS prevention methodologies in order to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases among sub-Saharan communities resident in Europe. This project was co-financed by the EU, involving seven partners, each representing a member country, AJPAS (Portugal), AFAPAC (Netherlands), AHT (Sweden), FOCUS (United Kingdom), GDRR (France), Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Spain) and SIREAS (Belgium). Paulo also worked as Project Coordinator in “SEYPA, Combating Social Exclusion of Young People Affected by HIV/AIDS”. This project included five countries liaising with young people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS dealing with issues such as Health Services, Housing, Employment, Community and Social Care, Family, Schools, Leisure and social relationships. This project aimed at getting these young people involved in finding and sharing solutions to reduce social exclusion of those affected by HIV/AIDS, among the project network and beyond by using five partner NGOs - Romanian Angel Appeal (Romania), Every Child (Russia), ACTUA (Spain), AJPAS (Portugal) and CARAP-ONLUS (Italy). This project was honoured with a “Recognition of Achievement Certificate Award”, by GlaxoSmithKline. Paulo was nominated, on behalf of YouAct, the European Youth Network on Sexual and Reproductive Rights, as NGO Delegate in UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board, for the Europe Region, in 2005, serving the Board until December 2007. Paulo attended (in the capacity of NGO Delegate for the Europe Region) the 18th PCB meeting (June 2006, Geneva, Switzerland), the 19th PCB meeting (December 2006, Lusaka, Zambia) and the 20th PCB Meeting (June 2007, Geneva). Paulo is an affiliate with the following NGOs: GAT, the Portuguese HIV/AIDS Treatment Group; EATG, the European HIV/AIDS Treatment Group and AJPAS – Associação de Jovens Promotores da Amadora Saudável.
