Обо мне |
Last year I was in Costa Rica, on an internship through the International Institute for Sustainable Development (www.iisd.org), a Canadian organization in Winnipeg. I was placed with the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (www.iica.int) for six months where I did research of Fair Trade (www.fairtrade.net) which is a system whereby consumers pay a premium for products that are produced in a more ecologically and socially friendly manner. An example is organic, shade-grown coffee where farmer cooperatives make enough money to improve their social condition. However, I also looked at bigger issues of Fair Trade - beyond it's niche market. International trade in agriculture is very unfair for small farmers in the Majority World (www.maketradefair.com). Giant corporations dominate the market, North America and Europe provide big subsidies to their farmers to undercut prices in the rest of the world.
While living for the last 5 years in Toronto, I've been active in the sustainable transportation organization, Community Bicycle Network (www.communitybicyclenetwork.org), and the ecumenical social justice group, the Student Christian Movement (www.scmcanada.org).
