Subject: Introducing Nairobi Community Foundation

We are most pleased to introduce to you the Nairobi Community Foundation (NACOF). NACOF was registered by the government in December(2003) as a community foundation (CF) and a non-governmental non-profit making entity. A community foundation is a broad-based community-driven structure that exists to improve the standards of living in a given area using sustainable community philanthropy.

NACOF sees the city of Nairobi become the best city in the region with an abundant supply of sustainable opportunities for its citizens to live their dreams to the fullest. NACOF will pursue this vision by helping the people to help themselves. The work of NACOF will be guided by a six factor value system of (i) relevance (ii) efficiency (iii) effectiveness (iv) inclusiveness (v) sustainability (vi) passion. This mission is aptly summed up in the organizational slogan – Be Good, Do Good !. The main strategies to deliver the mission are community public education, community communications, community organizing, community facilitation, community networking, community research, community evaluation, community mobilization, community leadership and sustainable community philanthropy. NACOF is a public structure through which the corporate as well as individual philanthropists exercise their creativity to leverage resources to improve the quality of life in the city.NACOF is a community platform through which to pool together the resources necessary to fuel civic energy in the city – talents, skills, financial and non-financial resources. NACOF makes it possible for all of us to make our little contributions to leave the city of Nairobi better than we found it. NACOF also provides a common point for us to permanently endow opportunities that will benefit generations of people to come including endowed scholarships, endowed tournaments, endowed awards and endowed grant-making funds.

Today the city of Nairobi experiences monumental problems which require the sustained involvement of all the people to provide solutions. Crime rate is alarming, the environment has been badly degraded, poverty is extreme, unemployment levels have never been higher and Aids kills 70 people every day. There is much potential to involve the community to provide solutions to these problems through neighbourhood associations, community service organizations and faith-based groups. However the indigenous civil society remains weak and operates on a start-stop basis. By using the tool of endowed community-benefit philanthropy, NACOFl works to strengthen these civic groups so that they serve the city year after year.

We believe very strongly that by working with you we will not only be able to achieve this vision, but that we will exceed it. We would like to count on your participation in NACOF through financial support, contributions of ideas, contacts or other necessary resources. When you consider where we are coming from (see postscript), NACOF’s vision becomes compelling for the sake of ourselves and our children.

Postscript:-

(1) Where we are coming from - 60% of the residents of Nairobi are extremely poor and live in the slums without amenities of electricity, water and sanitation. 99% of the youth artistic, sporting and cultural talents goes to waste in Nairobi due to lack of opportunities. Many bright students miss schooling because of lack of fees.

(2) Where we envision to go – A healthy city. A safe city. A clean city. A working city. A caring city. A sustainable city.
