I am just finishing up my undergraduate degree at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and am expected to graduate in April 2010. Though not quite ready to put away the books yet, I plan on pursuing a Masters degree in Public Health with a concentration in global health in September 2010. Travelling. For me, seeing the world is one of my main sources of inspiration. By experiencing all of the greatness that this world has to offer and getting to know the fascinating people and cultures that surround them, I immediately begin to feel overwhelmingly appreciative of my own privileges that I often take for granted. I instantly realize that the problems in my life are of seemingly little significance and begin to appreciate my health, my home, my family and my friends to a whole other level. Through travel, my perspective on life and living broadens and I become inspired to participate in the global youth movement and make a difference. I believe that the sense of passion and motivation that are necessary to create change can only be acquired through travelling to these areas and experiencing the cultural differences first-hand. Why Africa? To me, this continent represents pride, joy, dance and despair. I have been dreaming of volunteering here since I began studying the culture from African history courses to a variety of health-related courses that discussed HIV/AIDS extensively. Through Youth Challenge International (YCI), I have been afforded this exciting opportunity and will be working with a small team as a Youth Ambassador in Mombasa, Kenya. I will be leaving at the start of May 2010 for 10 weeks. Although I am fearful of the unknown, I feel ready to learn as much as I can in Kenya and conquer my dream!
