About Me   About Me
I am Co-director of Running Across Borders, a non-profit organisation that expands economic opportunity to East African youth through running. Although poor these youth bear the internationally-coveted resource of tremendous ability and passion for high-level athletics. Running Across Borders assists them to utilize their economic potential. Our High Altitude Training Camp in Addis Ababa has selected 12 young male and female Ethiopians from rural backgrounds on which to focus. In the camp they train in a structured athletics programme under a qualified coach, recover with proper meals and accommodation, pursue education and employment concurrently with their training and gain the chance to race in domestic and international competitions. There are therefore three main operations to the organisation:

1. RAB High Altitude Training Camp - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
2. RAB Sports Management
3. RAB Sports Tourism through our Visit and Train Programme.

My interest and involvement with running stems from an 11 month experience in Kenya in 2001/2002, where I taught Physical Education, English and Geography at the remote Bonjoge Boy’s Secondary School, Nandi Hills, 7 hours North West of Nairobi. I was responsible for the school’s Cross-country and Athletics Club, training with the students and travelling with them to athletics competitions. The District level Secondary Schools Cross-country Championships held in Chepkumia, March 2002, was when I first met Stanley Leleito, then a young 16 year old in his second year of secondary school, now a professional athlete. Living at an altitude of 6,500 feet in the famous Kenya Rift Valley opened my eyes to the world of East African running and instilled within me a fervour for Africa.

I returned to Kenya under a research internship with the African Youth Foundation (AYF) (June-Sept 2004) and in November 2005 I travelled to Ghana under the auspices of the Universal Leaders Group, an initiative of AYF. Most recently travel to Kenya in March/April, 2008, gave me the opportunity to complete a 9 month research project on the development of the Kenyan Amateur Athletics Association (now Athletics Kenya) as part of my Master of Science (MSc) degree in African Studies at Oxford University.

The limited resources and challenges that many runners face was all to apparent, therefore, with the same self belief, determination and ambition that drives an East African Runner, Malcolm was inspired to establish Running Across Borders.

I hold an Master degree in African Studies (Oxford 2008) a first class honours degree in International Relations (St Andrews 2006) and was the Canadian Robert T Jones Jnr. (Bobby Jones) Scholar at the University of Western Ontario, Canada (2005)
