About me
I am keenly interested in matters of climate change, sustainable development, extreme poverty, food security, social justice and ecology/environmental issues. I lean towards the left on the political spectrum, with sympathy for the post-anarchist ideals of social ecology.
I am a recovering software executive ;-) seeking to make a constructive difference in the world. I am currently seeking career opportunities in the not-for-profit field.
In the meantime, I volunteer and occasionally work as an independent web/software developer, specializing in open source technologies , especially using the Python and Java programming languages on Linux platforms. Previously, I've had a progressive career in software development, beginning with 15 years at the IBM Toronto Laboratory and later many years with smaller firms and as an independent consultant in software development and information security, culminating with my position as VP Architecture and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at a security software company based in Toronto.
Most of my life I've lived in and around Toronto, Canada, although I've had the opportunity to travel extensively (mostly for work) to many parts of the world. Several years ago, my (then teenage) daughter and I traveled together as investors in The Hunger Project (www.thp.org) to launch new initiatives in Africa and South Asia.
For recreation I enjoy camping, canoeing, sailing (in my youth, I ventured on a square-rigged sailing ship where the motto was "building character through adventure") and reading non-fiction, esp. history, philosophy, socio-economics and science. Recently, I've also rekindled a passion for photography and I enjoy clubbing in the alternative music scene.
