 Over Mij |
I came into this world kicking and screaming and not much has changed. One day not long ago I realized that my conflicting thoughts could be turned to words on paper. My love for film and poetry only fueled a passion that would later become my life. Over time I learned that different forms of art gave me limitless possibilities creatively.
I got my first taste of live performance at Sakwwewak First Nations Artist Collective Story Tellers Series. There I got to read with some of the greats like Maria Campbell. Though my work is very dark, it's real, and I was encouraged to continue my writing. This was to be the first huge step of many down this road to self identity.
Early in my path, I had many opportunities given to me by CBC Radio One in Regina to be able to tell my stories. I also had the chance to read my poetry at live events like the Crow Hop Cafe, The Cathedral Arts Festival and this year in CBC’s National Poetry Face Off.
Finally the step had come to make a film of my own, Moment of Clarity, which was based by a poem of mine by the same name. This film was later purchased by the MacKenzie Art Gallery for their permanent collection in collaboration with Neil McLeod. This opened many other doors, later giving me the opportunity to work with the MacKenzie Art Gallery as their Artist in Residence.
My last film MAYASITIW was nominated for a Golden Sheaf award at the Yorkton Film Festival for Best Aboriginal Film in 2005. Most recently, Shane and my students from Scott Collegiate in Regina were nominated at the Hot Shots Student Film Festival for Best Sport Shorts... so sky seems to be the limit from here on... Peace.
