For the last three years of my life, I have been living in a place that is almost unexplainable to those who do not know it’s magic. The Arthur Morgan School has been my sanctuary and freedom. It is a small private school for grades 7-9 in Celo, Burnsville NC. What I have become today was largely influenced by the school and its people. I just recently graduated and will be forever grateful for all I have learned from my experience and that information I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Among the number of things, I learned I have come to value a few ideals rather strongly. I was taught about different learning styles and was introduced to experiential learning. The example I want to give happened to me most recently on an eighteen-day field trip. We were studying indigenous and misplaced people. We visited several reservations and then went down to Mexico U.S. boarder to talk to the Boarder Patrol and then Mexican sweatshop workers. There I realized the true meaning of experiential learning. I was talking to someone, going through the motions with people of what they do everyday, learning from their completely different lives. I found that this is what it means to actually learn and enjoy it for me. I have information with a face and an experience that I know I will not forget for the rest of my life. The point I want to stress the most and the thing that it is essential for everyone to understand is that after being truly taught I cannot go back to a public high school and become just another kid, another number and something to be dealt with. I cannot go to a school with no art program if I want to fulfill my dreams of creating a visual art portfolio next year and being accepted to an art school. The school that I have been accepted to is called Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona. They have given me an amazing scholarship of $30,000 dollars but that still leaves me $7,400 short. After sending me to a private school for three years my family‘s funding is completely drained. Now they can only offer moral support in my quest for a higher education. I searched for a while looking for some kind of scholarship or personal grant for students in our state but I have found nothing. What I want to ask your club is you have any fundraising ideas, donations or if your group is not interested do you know any groups or people that might be? Please ask around, even if just your friends and family any help would be much appreciated. Thank you so much for all your time. Sincerly, Merry Rose Hughes
