About Me |
Mark Blackwell is currently a third year energy management student at the Haskayne School of Business in Calgary. Since his first year of university Mark has been committed to developing programs and initiatives that give students the opportunity to engage in experiential learning within the energy and environment realm. In his first year he worked collaboratively with the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment & Economy (ISEEE) to form the ISEEE Students' Association (www.iseeesa.ca). The organization plans a series of field trips each year and hosts an array of events and workshops bringing in some the leading officials in the industry to speak and interact with the students.
Through this organization Mark gathered a group of students to develop a framework for what will now be the 1st student-led global energy forum - 1st International Energy Summit (www.studentenergy.org) - and is excited to have such a passionate and dedicated group of students working to ensure the conference moves forward. In addition to ISES, Mark is currently the founder and Chairman of the 2009 Alberta Solar Decathlon Team (www.albertasolardecathlon.ca) which was one of 20 university teams selected from around the world to compete in the renowned Solar Decathlon Competition put on by the US Department of Energy. The project challenges the group, which consists over just under 100 students and faculties from all four of Calgary's post-secondary's, to compete in designing, building, and operating the most attractive energy-efficient solar-powered house.
For his passion and determination in the area of energy and the environment he earned himself Canada's Top 20 Under 20 Award and was also recognized as the Haskayne School of Business's 'Most Outstanding Non-Graduating Student'. In 2007 Mark also represented Canadian Youth at the 20th World Energy Congress in Rome, as one of 200 students chosen from around the world and represented the country as one of the top 50 international students and young professionals to attend the 19th World Petroleum Congress in Madrid, Spain last summer.
In his spare time Mark helps volunteer in his local community in the capacity of Director of Energy Conservation on the community's Board of Directors, enjoys hitting up the links for a round of golf and has a special interest in investing, architecture and traveling.
