Let me take you to my career path: At an age of 12 Mawethu joined a school choir and debate society at Mfundweni Higher Primary School in Port Elizabeth. He’s first awarded certificate was on the search of young girls and boys who knew how to read English and became in the 5th position. He became interested into school extra activities and organized an informal drama show, and directed a show using a material taken from the local news paper in the education cartoons section. When Mawethu was doing his Grade 10 he joined Student Christian Organization (SCO). The following year he became a Chairperson of his school SCO and later that year he was selected as a SCO Event Organizer in Zwide area. These two position help Mawethu to develop his leadership skills unaware. He went to Walter Sisulu Universtity to study Information, Communication and Technology in 2004 and joined Peer Education Programme in the Student Affairs Department. He was trained in Peer education and leadership skills before he was sent to volunteer at Ikhwezi Lokusa Wellness Centre; he served as an unpaid helper from May 2004 to June 2006. His duties were basic work: weighing patients, opening new files, counting medication, doing education presentation to the patients during their waiting time. Mawethu and her female peer started a patient support group during waiting period. The support group led Mawethu to join Saturday’s Learners Programme, this programme educated youth to debate about HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, abortion and self- esteem in a debate-dialogue methodology. In 2006 June Ikhwezi received a funding from CSIH in Canada to implement the project called “The Other Half Project”. I was promoted to receive a stipend and became a Youth Programme Co-coordinator. We created a drama group that was called “Driven Force” who acted educational plays on HIV/AIDS, human rights and domestic violence using Forum Theater of oppressed technique. One of remarking play acted on the 16 June 2007 (Youth Day) was about youth who fought and died in 1976 fighting against apartheid. This programme was born out of Saturday’s Learners Programme. My energies and my hard work made me promoted as a Project Manager few months before the end of the project to ensure that main activities are implemented as expected. Achievements: 1. Approval of Housing Vulnerable Groups of HIV/AIDS concept by the Department of Housing in the EC Province in 2008. 2. Approval of mini grant proposal for Kenya Conference in 2008. 3. Approval of Youth leadership Project proposal by GYCA in 2008. 4. Completed a Project Management Monthly Course provided by Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) in 2008. 5. Selected as a National Focal Point of South Africa by GYCA in 2008 6. Attended a Forum Theatre and skills management training in Mixed Theatre Company and Niagara College in Canada in 2007. 7. Awarded an excellence in co-ordinating Youth Education Program & Participation in community fundraising in 2006. 8. Awarded an excellence in Youth Education & Outreach Programme in 2004 9. Recognition on WSU campus radio for peer education radio program aimed at educating students in WSU in 2006. 10. Has successfully completed the required training in Peer Education Programme in 2005. 11. Attended a 1 day Peer education workshop on domestic violence & awarded a merit certificate for a dynamic involvement in the Community by FAMSA in 2005. 12. Trophy as the Most Dedicated Peer Educator in 2004 in WSU. My dream: To open a youth centre in one of informal settlements area. I am currently in the planning phase in achieving my dream.
