Maulik Baxi is a physician and dynamic young leader with multiple expertise. Maulik’s interests spans into environmental health, information technology, development and youth issues as well as health care and systems research. Described as “Ambassador to the future” by Microsoft, Maulik is also one of the pioneer researchers in Essential Trauma Care Services in India. Maulik holds a medical degree from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India and Masters of Public Health from Columbia University in New York.

Maulik founded Taxila - Center for Medical Reforms and Research, a non-profit think-tank as a medical student in 2003. The organization has grown from a school level interest group to a global movement for better health. Taxila undertook a groundbreaking research to analyze the deficits in Essential Trauma Care Services in India. Based on the criteria developed by the WHO, Maulik conducted a needs assessment survey for the first time in India and only the second in Asia. The findings of the survey helped expand the trauma systems outreach and development for the entire state.

Maulik’s interest into the pandemic of HIV/AIDS drove him to study the illness into detail with special emphasis on vulnerability issues of young people. He traveled to Canada and Egypt as a leader and researcher to present his ideas and guide the youth movement. Maulik Co-Chaired the Youth Advisory Committee for the International AIDS Conference at Toronto in August 2006 and serves on a WHO/UNAIDS board of experts for the consultation on HIV/TB co-infection. He also serves as a core team member in the cross-cutting issues expert group for the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors study.

Information technology has been a special focus of interest for Maulik. Maulik served as an advisor for Microsoft and was designated as a member of the Microsoft Office Information Worker Board of the Future in 2004. Maulik shared his ideas, built scenarios and ventured into developing a vision for the next generation of the work force along with the fellow Board members and Microsoft executives. In 2005, he was invited to speak on future of work in the changing world at the Microsoft Global Accounts Summit at Bangkok, Thailand.

Maulik acts as consultant on health care and the environment in New York City for nonprofit organizations. He also serves on the editorial boards of a number of journals. His current interests are cardiovascular surgery, morbidity and mortality due to air pollution and climate change, emergency medical services and trauma care as well as the molecular basis of diseases. He is available for consulting, writing and speaking arrangements online.
