About Me   About Me
My name is Mateo Bonilla, I am 19, and I am a summer intern at the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA, http://www.youthaidscoalition.org) an international alliance of young people addressing HIV/AIDS in 148 countries worldwide. I am fluent in both English and Spanish (having grown up in Ecuador and moved to New York six yeas ago) and have experience as both an oral and written translator. I come from a family of Latin American human rights advocates and have worked with and alongside NGOs for much of my life.

I have completed two recent internships with much relevance to the Coalition position. At the Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project (NEDAP), conducting and analyzing surveys (in both English and Spanish) in immigrant communities of the Bronx relating to the use of banks and credit agencies. I also served as a translator for numerous trainings in these neighborhoods on social and economic issues and regularly responded to questions about credit agencies and fair lending programs. Prior to that, I took part in the Youth Advocacy Training Program at the Citizens’ Committee for Children (CCC). During the course of this three month program, I conducted weekly interviews with community members in the Bronx and Harlem relating to access to child health care and the prevalence of certain health problems. At the CCC, I helped analyze and develop the surveys and polling techniques to ensure their effectiveness and, at the end of the program, helped present our findings and recommendations to members of the NYC government.

I have just completed my first year at SUNY-Geneseo (I am 19 years old), where I am majoring in political science and international development. Over the Winter term, I worked in the lower ninth ward of New Orleans with Common Ground, cleaning up waste and eventually managing a small crew. My years in Ecuador (where I spent much time in the Amazon) and my more recent experiences and education, have provided wide exposure to the challenges facing developing countries and poor communities in the United States and a commitment to working in these fields. My “expertise” with HIV is limited to informal studies, but I am very familiar with the political, social and economic conditions underlying this and other health problems.
