About me
Hi everyone! My name is Lucy, I'm 17 years old, and I'm currently attending my last year of high school at Markville SS in Markham, Ontario. I first became involved with TakingITGlobal through Shad Valley, a summer program that I attended two years ago.
The project that I'm currently trying to develop is a philanthropic organization that raises money and awareness among Western youth toward reconstructive cosmetic surgery for those who need it in third-world countries. I was first inspired by this article that I saw in Time Magazine about a young Afghan woman who had acid thrown on her face just because she wanted an education. (The picture is slightly graphic: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2007415,00.html)
It really made me think about how many of us take vanity and possessions so lightly. Because I'm greatly disturbed by the sheer rise of plastic surgery rates in North America and how superficial our media and its pressures can be, I thought that it was important to create an organization that helps give appearances back to those who actually need them (and who wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise) while also raising awareness regarding our own attitudes. The people I ultimately hope to support include those who were born with a deformity, those who suffered accidents, or those recovering from abuse and who now all could benefit from reconstructive surgery.
On the side, in my personal life, I love reading and I'm a total music addict. I also enjoy photography and watching films. Another organization I'm involved with is a literary magazine that my team is currently working on and is planned to launch late January of this year. I also volunteer with the United Way of Toronto in my city.
I can't wait to hear about all your initiatives and to work with you guys!
