About Me |
Born in Singapore, Nelson went to school at Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College, which were among the best in the country. He was a volunteer for the Red Cross and held the position of Treasurer, participating in many fund-raising projects and serving as a first-aider. He was also the Vice-Chairman and Secretary of the Raffles Wargamers, and produced the inaugural issue of their Peacekeeper magazine. He studied economics and statistics at the National University of Singapore, graduating top of his class in 1998. While he was there, he organised a stock exchange game on behalf of AIESEC in collaboration with the Stock Exchange of Singapore.
While still studying at the National University of Singapore, Nelson started his career as a freelance web designer and desktop publisher. He was the assistant webmaster at the Singapore round of the World Trade Organization meetings held in 1996. He also spent one summer at the agency Dentsu, Young and Rubicam as an account servicing and media secretary. Upon graduation, Nelson found a full-time job as an Internet and broadband systems engineer at Singapore Telecom and subsequently transitioned into broadband solutions consulting at Hewlett-Packard. As a solutions consultant, Nelson has travelled across countries including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Switzerland and the UK. He has also been part of a week long missions team to Thailand organized in collaboration with an orphanage in the vicinity of Chiang Mai.
In 2002, Nelson moved to Canada. After graduating with a master's degree in Economics from the University of Toronto, he served as an economist at the Bank of Canada, Canada's central bank. His main interests in the field of economics are international development and industrial organization. In March 2006, Nelson left the Bank of Canada to concentrate on developing an online community for research collaboration, which he plans to launch in June 2006. Nelson speaks and writes mainly in English but can communicate in French, Mandarin and Cantonese as well. He enjoys canoeing, skiing, hiking, biking, playing tennis and bridge.
