I am interested in Hi-Tech/Cyber Crime and Computer Misuse. With the technological advancement and the easy accessibility of internet and e-Commerce in recent years, criminals seize this opportunity to use the electronic media to conduct crimes such as credit card fraud, paedophile, hacking, virus attack. These criminal activities have caused corporations and individuals vast amount of financial losses through credit card fraud, financial swindle and virus attack. They have also widely affected safety and stability of the society while children are being targeted by paedophiles through the internet. Enormous amount of police resources have to be incurred to combat these criminal activities which have become a significant social problem affecting all walks of life. It is widely acknowledged that currently the solutions to tackle the Hi-Tech and Cyber crimes are still very much in a Greenfield due to the immaturity and short establishment of the information and communication technologies. In the past, I was involved in computer security and have worked with some Information Technology (IT) security experts. To my astonishment, the IT security professionals bust up the security firewall and readdress levels of access based on their own belief that it might be the right thing to do. They never look at the area off criminology or work with criminologists to look at the “human” side of the motivation behind those criminal acts. Having gained a PhD degree in Computer Science in 1999, I would like to do an inter-disciplinary research combining Information Technology and Criminology together to achieve the goal. I have obtained a research scholarship from the UK Home Office through the Bramship Fellowship Programme to do a 2nd PhD in: " Hi-Tech/Cyber Crimes – Identification/Analysis of crime patterns and approach on prevention/reduction” at the University of London - London School of Economics (LSE) under the supervision of Prof. Tim Newburn. I just started at the beginning of October. The pressure is already getting on me. I am exhausted
