Sen Thong is part of the new generation of young New Zealanders' providing leadership and insight into youth and urban development internationally. Currently an a government advisor to the Ministry of Youth Development in New Zealand. Having being born and raised in inner-city Wellington, from a solo refugee mother as a single child and growing up amongst a multi-cultural mosaic, Sen quickly aligned and developed his study and participation of the global hip hop culture phenomena. This provided the foundation to express his creativity and interaction with people from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, whilst developing a name for his skills in dancing and DJing. Having studied Law and Commerce at Victoria University, Sen after his first year of Honours studies, was propelled into the position of Clerk for the Chief District Judge of New Zealand and then later on to the Institute of Judicial Studies. Whilst studying at university and working with the judiciary, Sen also ventured into the publishing arena - launching New Zealand's first Hip Hop magazine - Back2Basics after starting the Charitable Trust Corners Covered at the age of 19 . In 2002, Sen was asked by the Mayor of Wellington to attend the first Youth Employment Summit in Alexandria, Egypt as the sole New Zealand delegate. Following this ground-breaking event, Sen returned to New Zealand and became the Youth Partner to the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs and established the New Zealand Youth Employment Network (an advisory group to central and local government), whilst also sitting as the Youth Advisor to UNICEF New Zealand. In 2003, Sen was selected by the nationwide Knowledge Wave initiative as one of New Zealand's 100 Emerging Leaders. In 2004, Sen moved from Wellington to Auckland to complete one of his dreams - to create a commercially viable Hip Hop publication and media company, this flourished into Back2Basics Media Limited, which published New Zealand's only Hip Hop Magazine and provided design and photography services to the music industry and consumer brands sector. Sen in the same year, was also invited to sit on UNESCO's (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) National Commission as New Zealand Culture Sub-Commissioner. Having attended many international gatherings as a New Zealand delegate ranging from Commonwealth to South Pacific Forums, Sen has seen his international involvement increase. In 2005, Back2Basics was on-sold to another media company and Sen has since been consulting to the media, government and corporate organisations, whilst also sitting on the United Nations Decade for Education on Sustainable Developmen t(UNDESD) Co-ordinating Committee. This background allows Sen to traverse comfortably from the urban environment to the boardroom and international environment. Prior to coming on board with the Ministry of Youth Development, Sen has been consulting in Public Relations with an Australasian communications agency, he speciallised in the youth market sector and also in corporate social responsibility.
